Book Description

Lori Walker is struggling to cope with the abrupt loss of her heart surgeon husband when she meets three thirtysomething widows: larger-than-life Cecelia, sweetheart Suzanne and no-nonsense Kate.

The four women form a friendship that is never more important when Lori soon discovers that her husband may have been murdered…

Set against the haunting backdrop of beautiful Edinburgh, secrets are soon unpicked at the seams and scandal resurfaces when Lori starts to question the integrity of the man she married…

Through humour and heartache, more drama unfolds as the widows face their worst fears and a past that haunts them.

Four Widows is a suspenseful mystery unravelling murder, mistakes and, ultimately love––its greatness and its acute complications.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extremely entertaining mystery March 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I originally wanted to read this book because I love all things Scotland and have always wanted to travel there and this book is set in Edinburgh. I also love a good page turning mystery and this one looked like a good one!

I love the premise of this book. A young woman, Lori, loses her husband and forms a bond with other women who are also widows. Lori slowly finds out that maybe her husband's death was not an accident. I will say no more! I am really big on not ruining books and this one is one that you have to read and enjoy for yourself. I will say that I love reading about strong female friendships, especially if those friends have secrets!

This book is funny, touching, smart and will keep you guessing until the end. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery with heart. I look forward to many more books by Helen MacArthur in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light mystery February 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
To be honest, I was expecting it to be grim. How can a plot about dead husbands be must-read material? But a friend recommended it and I was pleasantly surprised. Far from being depressing, it was a lively read in a sort of mystery-meets-Vogue-magazine sort of way. The short chapters made it easy to pick up and put down, which is good on a daily commute. Light mystery but not lacking substance.

5.0 out of 5 stars SMASH HIT April 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story was written extremely well. The author has a unique writing style that is strong, refreshing and elegantly humorous at times. I think MzcArthur's greatest talent is that of describing the feelings brought on by insomnia or the feeling one has when given shocking news. I could almost feel the heaviness in my own chest at those times when Lori could feel that she was about to be told something that would be upsetting to her.

The author's use of humor is the best I've ever encountered in a novel. Not one time did the humor take attention away from the story or appear out of place. This takes great skill, and I believe it's an inborn trait to be able to express humor so aptly in a story with undertones of loss, betrayal and fear.

The only negative, in my opinion, was the start. I was tempted to not read beyond the third chapter, but am so grateful I stayed with it. It is a superb story that I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Four Widows March 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a very well written first novel. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and was very sorry to have it end. Hoping against hope Iooked-up Helen MacArthur on-line to see if there are any more books by her. I was able to realize the emotions of Lori and her friends-having experienced widow-hood myself. I would give it 6 stars or more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Four Widows September 26, 2013

This story is fast moving, keeps your attention. The lead character tends to be a bit annoying, but I would search out this author for other novels.
