5.0 out of 5 stars The best novel of this summer.
I have seven words for this book:
hilarious, raunchy, heartwarming,
thoughtful, indulging, sarcastic,
and engaging. Once I picked up the book,
I couldn't stop reading till it was 5am.
Of course, I think no other straight
man would be able to tolerate this book
or let alone enjoy as I did. But if you are
a reading woman, don't...

3.0 out of 5 stars Was this book British or American?????, March 12, 2003
This review is from: Fourplay: A Novel (Paperback)
While I enjoyed the story and thought it was a fun, frothy, quick read, great for the beach, the editing of the American version of the book left a lot to be desired. I was completely confused (not to mention flabbergasted) when, almost at the end of the story, I suddenly realized that these London-based characters are using American dollars and cents instead of British pounds and pence as their form of currency (see page 220). I actually stopped and went back to the beginning to make sure that they really lived in London, after all! I mean, COME ON! Do these people who "dumb down" British books for those of us forced to buy them in the United States REALLY believe that we are so stupid that the wording has to be changed--what, we might not be able to read British??? And who is proofreading this stuff?? I feel sorry for the author that such a travesty was made of her book. But a word of advice for her ---proofread EVERYTHING because you never know what idiot is going to be changing things in YOUR WORK. It reflects back on you, not them--your name is the one on the cover!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great escapist fiction!, September 24, 2002
This review is from: Fourplay: A Novel (Paperback)
I read this kind of book purely to be entertained. And Fourplay did that! I found the characters enjoyable and well drawn out. As a matter of fact I think Jo's mother and my mother may be the same person. While the situation of having four men panting after you right after a divorce may not be very realistic, it was definitely fun to read about.

4.0 out of 5 stars An abandoned wife's best revenge is a slew of suitors., March 4, 2008
By
This review is from: Fourplay: A Novel (Paperback)
Jo discovers that her husband Jeff has become a cliché - he's just hit forty and celebrates by having an affair with a young secretary at his firm. They separate and as Jo tries to forge a new life, she realizes that there were cracks in the relationship and they had grown apart long before Jeff strayed. With her new life come new romances and while Jeff has his new little tart, he's surprised when Jo starts dating again, then initiates a divorce. As she tests the waters with a couple new men, Jo discovers that there are a lot of frogs out there, and Prince Charming might have been right in front of her all along.

Moore's slice of life after divorce is a funny and at times bittersweet story. Readers will know who she belongs with and just hope she'll get her act together! Family strife and health crises also add to the story, along with a funny and tough talking best friend. Yeah, there are flaws, and it is set in London and dollars and quarters are mentioned... but does that really take away from the story? Not at all - it's a funny and quirky novel by a very witty writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick & Fun Read!, January 13, 2003

Jennifer (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fourplay: A Novel (Paperback)
Pick up this book if you are looking for an uplifting story about
love and divorce and a woman bouncing back from the unthinkable.
Having watched my sister in law go through a similar situation--being left for another woman, the author correctly went through all the emotions and stages of being left but kept it light and airy enough to keep you laughing instead of crying.

This read is similar to a Bridget Jones for the divorced.
It was funny, touching and filled with enough romance to keep you rooting for the main character all the way to the end.

Can't wait to read another by Jane Moore.

5.0 out of 5 stars a good, fun brit lit chick book!, January 14, 2003
This review is from: Fourplay: A Novel (Paperback)
33yr old Jo is married and has 2 kids. Her husband, Jeff, is in a hurry one morning and gives her a set of recently developed photos but didn't include the whole set. Jo is curious where the 5 missing pictures are so she goes to the photo place and gets another set done. She sees the missing photos and finds out that Jeff is having an affair!

Jo enters the dating field and the reader gets interested in all her men! She must only pick one as well as maintain her interior decorating job and life being a single mom.

This british chick literature that will delight you and tug at your emotions. Beautiful read - excellent writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, December 4, 2002
This review is from: Fourplay: A Novel (Paperback)
The reviews I read on this book were that it was a modern day fairy tale, and I couldn't agree more. While you will identify with the heroine, the lovely Jo Miles, I don't think it's realisitic to think you'll have four men panting for your attention. Two of the men could have any woman they wanted, and one of the others could easily buy any woman he wanted! But it's a fun read, I couldn't put it down, and it's a nice break from the real world. You'll find yourself rooting for Jo at the end of the book, and wishing you could find out what happens next. To me, wondering about what happens after the end, is always a mark of a well-written, entertaining read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Four Bores, April 25, 2005
By
This review is from: Fourplay: A Novel (Paperback)
The title and blurb of this are actually a little bit misleading because all the men that pursue Jo are actually pretty interchangeable. Martin (a rich guy) is so boring a character he's practically a carboard cut out. Then there's Sean whose only redeeming feature seems to be a talent for doing oral sex. Her ex Jeff has no redeemable features whatsoever and Connor, while nice and sympathetic and all that, isn't sparky or temperamental or funny or anything.

The heroine, Jo, comes off as fairly wishy washy. Why oh why oh why would she want to make a pick from this lacklustre bunch when she is only 34? There are other men out there Jo!! You are not over the hill yet.

That said, Jo is a lovable character and although a lot of this book is long winded and dull I cracked on because .... I had nothing better to do and I was waiting to see more of the 'trashy sex' the blurb told me I could expect on the cover. Well, there wasn't much sex, trashy or otherwise.

It wasn't hilarious either. A pleasant enough read I suppose but didn't set my world or loins alight!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, December 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Fourplay: A Novel (Paperback)
As someone who is in the process of getting divorced, due to an unfaithful spouse, I found this book to be a very humorous and enjoyable read. There were many times when I could totally sympathize with Jo as she went through her trials and tribulations. And although the thought of four men to pick from post divorce isn't THAT likely to happen, it is nice to be optimistic! I read it cover to cover in a day, while trying to get everything ready for Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, fun read!!, August 11, 2003

This review is from: Fourplay: A Novel (Paperback)
I bought this book on a whim to take the beach and finished reading it last night. It is a very easy, enjoyable read and was so easy to fall for the characters. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a "fun" read. You easily get "lost" (in a good way) in this book and, in my case, I was sad to see it end.
