5.0 out of 5 stars The Case For Laura Love
A friend turned me onto her about 2 weeks ago with this CD, and I just saw her in concert a couple of nights ago. I've been trying to think of another female artist who can go toe to toe with LL, all things considered, and I can't come up with anybody:

1. First of all, she PLAYS an instrument. And not an instrument that can float on top of the band. ie, piano,...

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a let down
Although I have enjoyed all Laura Love's other albums that I have listened to I think Fourteen Days is not a good pick, especially for someone new to her. The songs seemed very simple and a little childish; several songs reminded me of a previous songs on the same album. There were only a few highlights, mostly in the lyrics. I think that any other album she has made...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Case For Laura Love, November 20, 2000
This review is from: Fourteen Days (Audio CD)
A friend turned me onto her about 2 weeks ago with this CD, and I just saw her in concert a couple of nights ago. I've been trying to think of another female artist who can go toe to toe with LL, all things considered, and I can't come up with anybody:

1. First of all, she PLAYS an instrument. And not an instrument that can float on top of the band. ie, piano, guitar, horns, etc. As a bass player, in my opinion, she is the most integral part of the rhythm section, creating the whole groove; even more than the drummer, because she also has the harmonic component. And not just any bass part - she creates a ferocious groove that demonstrates a true technical and rhythmic ability.

2. Her voice and singing is so varied and convincing. Maybe not the kind of natural-phenomenon-type of voice in the accepted sense of your vocal "divas" - Whitney H., Natalie Cole, Mariah C., Celine Dion, etc. Yet she appears to be more versatile than they are, and delivers it in a more natural, unrehearsed, uncontrived manner. Which, for me, is all related to the next point...

3. Material. Almost all of those powerhouse singers do stuff that was written FOR them, not BY them. And most of it is so bad. Only the occaisonal really good song, and in the big picture, that just ain't enough.

4. For her instrumental, writing, and vocal prowess, I have to automatically put her above the aforementioned artists. Which leaves the few girls who can play, write, and sing ie.

Jewel, Etheridge, Indigos, Rickie Lee, Morrisette, MacLachlan, etc, don't have anything near her instrumental chops, nor the voice. The more sophisticated females, Joni Mitchell, Diana Krall, etc., in my opinion just don't have the emotional power and delivery, or diversity. There are many really good female jazzers, but they are for the most part interpreting other people's music, and typically don't play AND sing, so I can't put them in her league.

5. Lastly, is there anybody with that kind of magnetism on stage - anybody who can combine that with the musicality? Laura Love is a music MACHINE!!

The CD is wonderful, but it really doesn't do her justice - you need to see this girl live.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing album from Laura Love, July 5, 2000
This review is from: Fourteen Days (Audio CD)
If "Shum Ticky" disappointed some fans by rehashing old material, then "Fourteen Days" will make you a true believer. Getting right back on the same track as her amazing "Octoroon," Laura funks, blues, raps, and slams her way through these musical gems. All the gifts of witty lyrics and slamming musical compositions are back with a vengence.

The opening cut, More of You, opens with a rhythm and guitar section that seems like a slowed-down, enriched version of the opening to "Give me Five" from Shum Ticky. Laura sounds almost sultry and smokey on these lyrics; then her chorus breaks into the lyrical yodel/singing that is so... Laura. "Fourteen Days" is another gem, with the kind of witty song-writing that just makes you want to laugh out load from the sheer joy of it all. "Sometimes Davey Wins," a personal favorite, rocks out, with Laura providing a trademark over-track on some of the verses, adding a mouth-music like rhythm track over the song. And lyrical, well she's right on point.

Especially nice is her recording of Stoned Soul Picnic. You can just see Laura, her girlfriend, and a bunch of her buddies riding to the park to have a lazy picnic in the grass. It's just so smooth and soothing, you want to hum and sing along with windows or the top down, riding through the country.

I hope Laura's around for a very long time -- her music just keeps getting better and better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laura Love, August 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Fourteen Days (Audio CD)
The infectious and exciting blending of musical types that Laura Love creates moves the mind and body. Laura Love's animated spirit, sense of musical adventure, and unique sense of style comebine to make a thoroughly enjoyable CD from one of music's most innovative up-and-coming stars. Blurring the lines between rock, folk, rhythm and blues, and funk, Laura Love crosses the lines of musical bounds and creates a sound that reflects the adventurous spirit of her own unique, vivacious, personality.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cd worth buying!!!, March 3, 2002

I whole heartedly recommend Laura Love's cds to anyone who has an appreciation for good music of all types. no matter what the different labels people put on different types of music, lets face it talent is talent and Laura and her band are very talented. All of my friends that I have introduced to Laura's music have loved it as well. She has a pleasently unusual voice that is both strong and beautiful. Her snappy style of bass playing has a way of making you want to get up and dance and not even feel shy about it! I recently had the pleasure of attending one of Laura's concert's in Ashland Oregon and meeting her. It was wonderful, she is as talented live as she is on her cds, a sigh of the real thing. on stage the same good sense of humor and fun loving spirit shines through as does on her records!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the best!, November 22, 2000
This review is from: Fourteen Days (Audio CD)
This is Laura Love's best so far. The title song is one of those that plays over and over in your mind, but all the cuts are great. Two of them, "Stone Soul Picnic" and "Shenandoah," are remakes but I like the way Laura does them better.

As for Laura Love, I first saw her at the Dawson City Music Festival in Canada in 1998. I have to say that she is the most dynamic stage personality I have ever seen. For a whole week, there was non-stop music from 11am to 4am every day. As dead as we were in the morning, Laura was there to get us going again. Two years later, I am just now recovering, but am keeping my eye open for another chance to see Laura Love again in concert.

I have several of Laura's cds, and I'm blown away by them all. This one has a wonderful blend of musical styles to keep you guessing what's coming next, and all the songs are performed perfectly by Laura and her band. My favorite is Sometimes Davey Wins and her cover of the Laura Nyro Stone Soul Picnic. Her voice and her bass playing are incredible, and she should be heard by anyone who enjoys great music. Laura Love is great, and this is one of her best reordings to date. Sometimes Davey wins is probably my favorite cut on the album, followed closely by her cover of Lauro Nyro's classic. As one reviewer has already pointed out, Laura Love not only has an amazing voice, but is a powerhouse bass player as well. If anyone out there wants to listen to someone who has a fantastic voice, an amazing band, and a real talent when it comes to playing an instrument, this is the cd for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars incredibly disappointing.., November 4, 2000

suzy d. schmidt (watertown, wisconsin) - See all my reviews

i think i actually lowered my iq by listening to this cd.. i listened to it once (yes, i actually suffered through the entire cd, hoping the music would get better.. it didn't) and after that, i threw (and not gently, i might add) it into the back of my car, where it still resides.. collecting dust. i will even go as far as to say that i don't think i have ever listened to an album that was this TERRIBLE. if it were possible to score items with stars that reached into the negative numbers, i would most definitely take advantage of the option in this case..

please- i beg you.. do NOT buy this cd, unless you're looking for an over-priced coaster. (though i'm not sure even *that* would work well- with the hole in the middle, and all) seriously- stay away from this cd.
