5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Update to an Old Classic, April 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery (Paperback)
This is a wonderful detailed book of the the finest potters to be found in the southwest. This new expanded edition provides great family trees of the finest of Pueblo potters. If you're planning a visit to the Southwest and hope to meet some of these potters, it is the perfect companion book to The Native American Indian Artist Directory that will actually provide phone numbers and mailing addresses for many of the potters found in this outstanding edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another art gem, August 13, 2008

For anyone interested in Native American pottery, this volume is a must-have.

We are lucky enough to have met Florence Chavarria Browning of the Santa Clara pueblo, and to have purchased one of her spectacular black pots.

These particular pots are not glazed, but fired specially to create the pure, colt black of onyx, darker than coal, and softly glowing. Very few artists have skill enough to burn these amazing pots, and this book, introduces readers to the best of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pottery Brought to Life, November 11, 2011
This review is from: Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book on Pueblo pottery, one which includes not only fourteen families, but also their family trees and stunning photos of old and new pottery. There isn't much I can say about this book that hasn't been said by other reviewers, but, because there's not a "Look Inside This Book" feature here, I'll list the families.

Hopi-Tewa --The Chapella Family; The Nampeyo Family; The Naasie Family
Acoma Pueblo --The Chino Family; The Lewis Family
Zia Pueblo -- The Medina Family
Cochiti Pueblo -- The Herrera Family
Santo Domingo Pueblo -- The Melchor Family; The Tenorio Family
Santa Clara Pueblo -- The Chavarria Family; The Gutierrez Family; The Tafoya Family
San Ildefonso Pueblo -- The Gonzales Family; The Martinez Family

If you love Pueblo pottery, you will love this book. And if you know nothing about Pueblo pottery but want a great introduction to it, you will love this book.

I have a santa Clara Black Pot made by Christiana Naranjo and I wanted to find out about the history of the pot and the maker. I found Christiana, her family and thier connection to Native American Southwest Pottery. This book is the best refrence on Southwesrern Pottery I have ever found. It also is a great historical reference to the pottery culture.

This is a terrific book if you are interested in the timeless pottery of the southwest area. The pictures are very good with lots of information. It is an excellent resource connecting artists and styles. I was able to find pottery that I had purchased years ago that the style is the same. I found a used book in excellent condition on Amazon at a reduced price. My only wish is that it would be a hard cover book instead of a paperback because I will wear it out looking at it. Of course it might cause you to want more pottery pieces. And thats not all bad!

Others have already talked about the range of pottery that is detailed in this beautiful book. What stands out for me is the incredible quality of the pictures and the 5 stars reflect that. I'm pretty finicky when it comes to the way art is presented in picture books. The plates in this book are outstanding, both in terms of the color and the size. Some books will show multiple pictures on a single page, with images that are too small to let you to fully appreciate the pieces that are being displayed. No worries about that here. It's strictly one picture per page with beautiful photographs throughout. If you appreciate Pueblo pottery, you will be WOWed by the way it's represented here.
