Book Description

November 8, 2009

The Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy, by Henry Cornelius Agrippa and unnamed others, is considered one of the cornerstones of Western magic, and the grimoires it contains are among the most important that exist in the Western tradition. For more than three hundred years, this mysterious tome has been regarded as difficult or even impossible to understand—until now.

Occult scholar Donald Tyson presents a fully annotated, corrected, and modernized edition of Stephen Skinner’s 1978 facsimile edition of the original work, which was six tracts published as one volume in 1655. For the first time, these classic works of Western magic have been rendered fully accessible to the novice practitioner, as well as occult scholars and skilled magicians. Tyson presents clear instruction and practical insight on a variety of magic techniques, providing contemporary magicians with a working grimoire of the arcane.

About the Author

Donald Tyson is a Canadian from Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Early in life he was drawn to science by an intense fascination with astronomy, building a telescope by hand when he was eight.  He began university seeking a science degree, but became disillusioned with the aridity and futility of a mechanistic view of the universe and shifted his major to English.  After graduating with honors he has pursued a writing career.

Now he devotes his life to the attainment of a complete gnosis of the art of magic in theory and practice.  His purpose is to formulate an accessible system of personal training composed of East and West, past and present, that will help the individual discover the reason for one's existence and a way to fulfill it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tyson forges the "Fourth" into an excellent, workable tool, December 18, 2009

This review is from: The Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy: The Companion to Three Books of Occult Philosophy (Paperback)
I have only just received Donald Tyson's excellent editorial working of "The Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy" last night. I am simply amazed at the breadth of knowledge Tyson pours into each of the six major sections through extensive annotation. As if that is not enough, each of the six sections is also followed by a working practical analysis, which allows those who wish to put the work into operation, a much firmer ground to stand upon. There is also the grand scope of material to be examined through the bibliography, marking the immense effort and care Tyson has taken in greatly expanding the understanding of "The Fourth" in particular and the beauty of Medieval/Renaissance ceremonial magic in general. Five bright stars....Dan

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Standard for the Heptameron, May 15, 2010
This review is from: The Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy: The Companion to Three Books of Occult Philosophy (Paperback)
Donald Tyson's compilation of the Fourth Book is stunningly complete. He spends a solid amount of pagespace explaining the origins of Agrippa and Abano's more obscure references. Tyson has done the same service to the Fourth Book that he did originally for the first Three (see Tyson's copy of the Three Books of Occult Philosophy).
