Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When the remains of a young woman and a newborn baby are unearthed from her seemingly tranquil garden, Jackie Kaminski's joy in being a new homeowner turns sour. In the final stages of her pregnancy, Jackie is on maternity leave from the Spokane police department in this fourth, and best, entry in Dalton's (Third Choice) series about the Washington State detective. Shy of committing fully to Paul, a rancher and the father of her baby, Jackie is determined to be a single mother. She becomes less sure when the baby arrives and Paul wants to be with them full time. Furthermore, Jackie's investigation into the murders brings a terrifying warning from the killer: "I wouldn't mind killing another baby." Satanism, incest and paranormal phenomena--along with creepy neighbors and an old diary hidden in a wall--add up to a suspenseful page-turner.

From Library Journal

In her fourth outing, Detective Jackie Kaminsky must solve a murder that took place 30 years earlier. This crime quite literally hits close to home: the victims, a mother and her baby, have been laid to rest in the flower bed of Jackie's new home. Jackie, out on maternity leave, fears that the murderer is still in her neighborhood and will harm her baby. To further complicate things, the father of her baby is doing his darnedest to convince this independent female that a wedding would be best for everyone involved. False identities, gritty suspense, and an evil that spans three decades will make this a popular choice with library patrons. Dalton lives in Alberta, Canada.ASM

5.0 out of 5 stars A very entertaining Kaminsky novel, May 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fourth Horseman (Jackie Kaminsky Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)

On maternity leave, Spokane Detective Jackie Kaminsky buys a home in a quite neighborhood that consists mostly of senior citizens. Jackie's childhood was marred by an abusive grandmother. This makes any permanent commitment even to the father of her unborn child, the person she loves (Paul Arnussen) extremely difficult.

While digging in her garden, Jackie and Paul uncover the remains of a woman and newborn baby. Jackie obtains departmental permission to question her neighbors about the bones that were buried for three decades. When she receives a threatening note that provides grim details that only the killer would know, Jackie realizes that the murderer will kill again to rebury the past.

The fourth Jackie Kaminsky romantic mystery is a winner! The who-done-it is well plotted inside a believable story line. Though clues are provided, readers will not be able to identify the killer until talented Margot Dalton reveals the culprit. In addition to the brilliant murder mystery, FOURTH HORSEMAN provides the fourth evolution of the relationship between Paul and the heroine. Ms. Dalton scores big time with this entertaining novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Writer, March 28, 2000

First, would Oprah just go away? Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's sellin' books, but not always good ones. Margot Dalton deserves far more attention than she's got as a writer..an enormously creative force at work here--this woman's books about suspense and children rank up there with the best. Yo--I'm talking about you, Henry James. Will publishing get real and put some muscle behind this writer? Hardly a chance--she ain't rubber stamp, just darned good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Entertainment & Suspense, December 29, 1999

I read all four Jackie Kaminsky series in two days! I found them to be suspenseful, believable & entertaining. I also liked the way her "gut feeling" was so often right on a case even when she couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was that bothered her. Most detective stories I have read also rely on that "feeling". I just want to know where(when) is the next book in this delightful series?
