5.0 out of 5 stars America, August 27, 2010
This review is from: The Fourth Part of the World: The Race to the Ends of the Earth, and the Epic St (Hardcover)
Toby Lester enriches his narrative with rich facts that are buried in the history books and maps. He writes like Sebastian Junger who wrote `The Perfect Storm' and `Fire' and Simon Winchester who wrote "The Professor and the Madman."
I highly recommend this book to one to review history and to learn about major shifts in our understanding of the world and knowledge. At the beginning of this period there were three parts to the world. This book describes the introduction in detail of the fourth part, North and South America. Can you imagine not having a visual understanding of this part of the world? Can you imagine how limited knowledge of our own planet was only 600 years ago? Lester does a yeoman's job (forgive the pun) of enlightening us.
The Council of Constance 1414 - 1418 was so important to our pervasive understanding of the world that it set the embryological process of coming together to share knowledge. The details of this council are woven into the narrative in such a clever way as to boost the story and keep the interest at peak levels. Unquestionably a tremendous job of holding the attention of the reader throughout. Congratulations Toby on a job well done.
