5.0 out of 5 stars A scary, funny and down-to-earth primer for new parents

1.0 out of 5 stars Nonsense!
I received this book as a gift after the birth of my first child. I now have five biological children (plus two adopted step-children), and I have yet to experience the absolute hell Ms. Einhorn seems to think new motherhood is. The entire premise of her book is "Having a brand new baby sucks. Your husband can't possibly understand, and your mother / mother-in-law /...

5.0 out of 5 stars A scary, funny and down-to-earth primer for new parents, May 23, 2001
This review is from: The Fourth Trimester: And You Thought Labor Was Hard... (Hardcover)
As I continue to struggle through the overwhelming information in "What to Expect...." while my wife and I expect our first child, I found Ms. Einhorn's book an incredibly realistic and humorous perspective on the madness that is "newborn propoganda." Her frank, refreshing voice highlighted the sometimes shocking experiences during the newborn's first 6 weeks. But despite all the mental and physical hardship that are in store for my wife (and to a much lesser extent me - that is now EMINENTLY clear), I found her book immensely reassuring. Her acknowledgement that we all have made, and will continue to make, mistakes and that it's basically OK is one of those obvious things that needs to be said. Thanks for this terrific read - it was the best 45 minutes of preparation I have spent over that last 8 months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every new mom needs this kind of humor, July 11, 2001
This review is from: The Fourth Trimester: And You Thought Labor Was Hard... (Hardcover)
I loved this book! It's helpful, chocked full of great tidbits of baby care and mommy care tips, and very, very funny! I'm a mom of two wee ones, and just bought this for my expecting girlfriend. She's going to love it (and need it)!

5.0 out of 5 stars It felt like my best friend was sitting with me at 3:00AM, January 23, 2003

One night at 3:00AM I was sitting with my new baby who was WIDE awake. I took a look at the bookcase, and pulled out this book which I had received as a gift. It was funny, reasurring and made me feel like I wasn't alone. The first few weeks are very tough on a new mom, and this book articulated it truthfully, with humor, and without the guilt.
I will make sure all my friends have it just in case they need to open it up in the middle of the night too!

5.0 out of 5 stars What to REALLY expect when you're expecting, August 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fourth Trimester: And You Thought Labor Was Hard... (Hardcover)
After reading this hysterical, honest look at the life of a new mom, I wondered if Amy Einhorn had perhaps camped out in my living room when I was busy wondering if my hair would fall out for lack of shampooing. I read pages here and there in between breastfeedings and attempts at napping, and each time got to laugh a lot and feel a little bit better. My suggestions for other moms who are feeling overwhelmed and underappreciated: buy this book. read it. laugh. feel good about everything you've accomplished in the past ten months.

My wife was reading The Fourth Trimester and when she was done, I decided to read it. It is truly a funny read and pretty darn helpful. I have one little girl and one on the way and I would recommend this book to any and all parents or soon-to-be parents. I hope Amy Einhorn writes "The Fifth Trimester."

5.0 out of 5 stars a GREAT little book that will make your heart smile, April 28, 2003
This review is from: The Fourth Trimester: And You Thought Labor Was Hard... (Hardcover)
I got this book when my daughter was just a week old and fell in love with it. I read it during those late night feedings and found myself smiling, when little would make me smile! (after the first 5 days of zero sleep) The book is not full of advice, just things that are funny and relate only to the first month or two after childbirth. It's written in short little segments that are perfect for short reading spurts. If you liked the segment on Oprah on "real motherhood," then you will like this book. If you have never had a bad day as a Mom, your baby doesn't cry, your breasts never hurt, you got plenty of sleep and your world is perfect - then you won't like this book.

I now buy this book for all of my girlfriends who have babies and everyone always says "That book was perfect." It's full of all the things that no one tells you, but yet you shouldn't read it until after the baby arrives...otherwise you might not go through it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic, funny and candid book about motherhood, December 3, 2002
This review is from: The Fourth Trimester: And You Thought Labor Was Hard... (Hardcover)
My brother had shared the great news with me that his wife was pregnant. Knowing that my sister-in-law was an avid reader I searched for something special and found The Fourth Trimester - the perfect book for new moms. My sister-in-law read it in one sitting, laughing and sometimes cringing at the ordeals mothers face. My wife and I read it too, thoroughly enjoying it and getting a honest and entertaining glimpse into the world of raising children - one we'll be facing in the next couple of years.

Great book! As a new mom, I could really relate! I gave it to my friend to read before her baby was born and it scared her to death! I also enjoyed "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy, or Everything Your Doctor Won't Tell You." Both these books were more informative than any doctor or midwife.

Certainly an uplifting book for those hard times. I had borrowed it from our local library during my fourth trimester and read it little by little during the wee hours of night breastfeeding sessions with my baby. Now, I buy it for every friend of mine who becomes a new mother. I highly recommend it. You will appreciate it if you approach babies with a certain sense of good humor. Enjoy.

This review is from: The Fourth Trimester: And You Thought Labor Was Hard... (Hardcover)
This is my standard gift for new mothers. It is hilarious and lets each new mom know she isn't alone in the full range of emotions and experiences that she is going through. I wish this book wasn't out of print but I search high and low to locate it each time a friend has their first child!
