Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- In her third adventure, pre-teen protagonist Desdemona Blank takes a seat among the ranks of the smart and quirky, such as Lois Lowry's Anastasia (Houghton) or Constance Greene's Al (Viking). While her character is not quite as firmly established as the other two, and the story line from sequel to sequel may be more jerky, Keller's Des and her supporting characters have their own scruffy charm. Here Keller brings her characters in touch with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Desdemona, stuck with making posters for the school play, enlists her introspective friend Sherman to help her. Sherman proceeds to paint pro-animal messages on the backs of the play posters. Desdemona is converted by his intense commitment and the graphic pictures of animal torture. In their fervor, they liberate a pair of ducks and attempt to plant propaganda in the play programs. The animal rights issue rings with the voice of the true believer, but this is not a tract. The mixed-up lives of Des, her single father, her twin siblings, and the rest of the crew are as frantic as in the earlier books, No Beasts! No Children! (1983) and Desdemona: Twelve Going on Desperate (1986, both Lothrop). Readers should be ready and waiting for this installment in Des' life. --Sally T. Margolis, formerly at The Newport Schools, Kensington, Md.
