1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected at all
Based on all the glowing reviews, I eagerly bought this whistle thinking that it would be loud and easy to use. Not so. I need to blow really hard to produce any adequate level of sound, which is basically just a high-pitched squeak. I was expecting the whistle to make a shrill but booming sound like the ones that referees use, but this whistle doesn't even come close...

I am a physical education teacher so a whistle can be my best friend when the need arises. This whistle is not only loud but the sounds emitted from it are controllable. Since the whistle is high pitched, even a small bit of air pushed through the mouth piece can be enough to grab the attention of my students. On the other hand when emergency scenerios come up a full blow on this whistle will stop everyone in their tracks. I would definitely recommend this whistle. Although, I didn't like paying 7 dollars for the whistle, I followed the reviews on this page and bought it anyway. I still thought after buying it that I was foolish to have spent close to 10 bucks including shipping on a whistle, but I realized after I received it, my money was well spent, and I will never purchase any other whistle then this one in the future. It is worth the extra money!

5.0 out of 5 stars CAN YOU SAY "PIERCING LOUD"?! Best Safety Whistle. Used by Law Enforcement, Park Rangers and Professional Sports Coaches., June 24, 2007
I keep this little baby on my keychain wherever I go. It's a survival tool that packs a punch. It's waterproof, can be heard from like a mile away, and requires very little breath behind it. I first used one when I found one in my mother's glove compartment, next to things she was taking with to work. My mother is a high-ranking law enforcement officer who works within the California State correctional system. This is what they use against the inmates and this is also what helps save their lives when they are in distress situations. I read somewhere that wilderness survival expert Doug Ritter always carries one of these with him wherever he goes. For the price and compact size of this little baby, you'll definitely get more than what you pay for. I wish I had this back when I was in Boy Scouts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will blow your own ears out, January 3, 2008

I also have this on my keychain wherever I go (be sure to wash it regularly if you do this).

First time I blew it, I temporarily lost about half my hearing. So now I try to only use it in non-emergency situations when I have ear plugs or muffs on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best whistle on the market, June 3, 2010

This review is from: Fox 40 CMG Whistle with Cushioned Mouth Grip (Misc.)
This whistle is probably one of THE loudest whistles on the market, which is great, but the thing that really makes this whistle great is the fact that it's pealess. A pealess whistle means that it doesn't have the little ball on the inside that wiggles around to help the whistle make sound. The pea may seem great and all, but the "pea" inside the whistle will stick to the sides if water gets in it which will render the whistle useless. Therefore, the pealess whistle is the superior choice. The Fox 40 CMG Whistle also has a little rubber mouth guard around the opening. This mouth guard makes it much easier on your teeth and on the whistle if you plan on using it for prolonged periods of time (like at a sporting event or when training a dog). The metal ring that secures the whistle to a lanyard is a double loop, which is much stronger than just a single loop, so you don't have to worry about losing your whistle. If you're lost, don't even bother shouting for help. Blow on the whistle instead, you'll save energy.

Pros:
Lightweight
Small
Very loud (can be controlled)
Has a mouth guard to protect your teeth and the whistle
Strong lanyard ring
Great for calling your dog or calling for help
Works when wet

Cons:
None

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent whistle!, August 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm no whistle expert (thus only 4 stars, as I had to leave room for that 5-star whistle that I'm unaware of), but this seems like an excellent whistle to me. I've had whistles in my lifetime, and I never knew where they disappeared to, and am not sure I really care. This one, I'll hang on to, and lament (well, maybe not that seriously) it's loss, if that ever happens. Costs a bit more than some of the other whistles, but I am very pleased with my purchase. About average size for a standard whistle. Seems too big to swallow & get caught in your throat like happens on the cartoons, which is a plus. Light. Durable. Attention-getting loudness. No moving parts. Won't rust, rattle, or be easily crushed. Comfortable and easy to use. You get to pick your color. Looks nice if you pick the right color for yourself. What else do you need from a whistle? I haven't tried to blow it under water, or in outer space (theoretically, I suppose, there should be no sound in a vacuum), so I can't give you any tests. I'm on the lazy side as a reviewer as far as that goes, but the other reviews cover that nicely. I have no complaints, nor disappointments. I can imagine this whistle could serve various purposes well -- for safety/protection, directing, survival kits, lifeguards, sports, parades, training, to just clowning around. Enjoy.

As a teacher, this whistle will grab the attention of kids with the shortest attention spans! I use this whistle at about half force when calling the end of recess and it could be heard across the yard easily. In fact, this whistle has made my teaching easier because when i so much as bring the whistle up to my lips, the kids hush because the whistle is irritating to them. Not to be mean, but this has saved so much "please be quiet" time and has allowed me to finish my lessons with ease.

I also plan to referee volleyball this summer with this whistle and it should work like a charm!

The whole reason i decided to write this review though is because I used it today in an emergency. I pulled over after seeing a motorcyclist lying on the ground and the whistle grabbed attention of emergency personnel more easily as they approached. Mind you, this is in San Francisco next to a busy highway!

My last note is that the mouth guard allows you to keep the whistle in your mouth without your teeth hurting and that is a BIG plus for me. This thing is priceless!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable feel with a powerful sound, February 17, 2007
As a football referee, I needed a whistle that will cut through the loudest crowd noise. No other whistle does it quite like the Fox 40. It has a shrill, piercing sound at 115 decibels. The problem came with me chewing through my whistles. When Fox 40 came out with their CMG whistle this problem was corrected. This is the most comfortable whistle I've used. I wouldn't use anything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, September 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased two for myself for traffic and five (all pink of course) for the kindergarten teachers at my wife's school. The seller provided tracking info which not all do. The whistles arrived in a timely manner and the poor kids have been suffering ever since. The whistle is also loud enough to penetrate closed vehicle windows to catch the attention of innattentive drivers on the cell phone! Good buy and I was very satisfied with the seller.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOUD LOUD LOUD and Comfortable, August 2, 2010

I'm a lifeguard so I usually like to keep this whistle clenched between my teeth to blow whenever I need to. This cushioned grip makes it much more comfortable than the hard plastic. As far as loudness goes, it makes my ears ring like hell if I give this thing a full blast. Loudness is not an issue with this whistle.

pack some ear plugs, or use both hands when blowing hard on this thing. You dont even have to try to blow in this thing to be heard from a reasonable distance. The strap is decent, but Im not too happy with how the clip is crimped on and its seeming flimsiness. Anyways good stuff, 5 stars.
