4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, It's Lovely, But I Want the Original Back!
Well, I'm glad Lalo re-recorded/released it, but he could have left good enough alone.

It's a stunning score - very Oriental in its simplicity, austere, reflective, and wholly evocative of lonely people aching for Eros in a cold, isolated setting - and I played that old 1968 Warners soundtrack all the way though grammar school, dreaming up gloomy things and atmospheric...

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, It's Lovely, But I Want the Original Back!, August 18, 2000
This review is from: The Fox (Audio CD)
Well, I'm glad Lalo re-recorded/released it, but he could have left good enough alone.

It's a stunning score - very Oriental in its simplicity, austere, reflective, and wholly evocative of lonely people aching for Eros in a cold, isolated setting - and I played that old 1968 Warners soundtrack all the way though grammar school, dreaming up gloomy things and atmospheric longings way before I was old enough to see the film adapatation of D.H. Lawrence's short story (which also ranks as Keir Dullea and Sandy Dennis' best film moments, I think).

I miss the old arrangements. The ones here are good, but something, for me, has been lost. I don't know who this new vocalist is on "That Night", but she missed all the sultry aching imparted by Sally Stevens on the original recording! Darn!

But for those who can't find the original vinyl, it's this is a must-purchase. THE FOX ranks as not only Lalo's best score, but a classic from the golden era of the late 60s, and probably one of the better film scores of all time.

3.0 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK NOW AVAILABLE !, August 6, 2007
This review is from: The Fox (Audio CD)
For those who have been unsatisfied with this re-recording of the soundtrack and have waited for the original and for those who are searching for the soundtrack for the first time, the original soundtrack, including vocals by Sally Stevens and Anne Heywood, has been released on the Warner Music/WB label from France, and is currently available on this site under another listing. Because the re-recorded version used the original movie/soundtrack poster (giving the false impression that it is the real one), the new, original soundtrack CD uses an alternate cover. So, if you want the AUTHENTIC, ORIGINAL soundtrack check the other listings for "The Fox" or Lalo Schifrin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Re-recording, August 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fox (Audio CD)
Lalo Schifrin's "The Fox" is a beautiful score. Jazz, sting quartet and orchestra are represented here. The music has a gloomily dark, contemplative feel that mirrors the events presented in the motion picture. It also seems lonely and isolated as the setting is in a Canadian forest during winter.

I've owned the vinyl soundtrack lp for thirty years. It's one of my favorite scores. I'm glad Mr. Schifrin handled the re-creation of his music as it is true to the original recording of 1968. It does not include Anne Heywood's version of "Roll it over" but you can always watch the movie if you need to hear that!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, August 24, 2010
This review is from: The Fox (Audio CD)
To be honest, I am not sure how to rate this. I got The Fox when collecting scads of Lalo Schifrin soundtracks: others were Bullitt and Dirty Harry

The Fox is assuredly not the blues funk jazz of either of those towers, but this is not a problem. If there is one thing I hate is people who say they love an artist and then baby stomp when that artist does not fit that preconception.

I find this mainly orchestral score interesting, but not containing a lot of the marks that makes Lalo Lalo. There is not a funky beat here. Instead, most of this is pretty delicate orchestral music.

Am I having a three-year-old kick scream hissy because Lalo did something different with the Fox? I don't think so. On its own merits, this score is nice to listen to, and the recurring theme written here is the most compelling piece of the album

But there is not a lot here to make me stand up, shock me, make me want to listen again. There are some exceptions: The opening paino bang on "The Proposel" is amazing, and I am sure if I could find more if pressed.

But there are not a lot of these stark moments here. If you like more subtle, classically influanced music, get The Fox. Just know it is the Fox, and not the customary Lalo, you're getting.
