4.0 out of 5 stars Great M&P - with caveats for some cuisines
I've had my marble mortar & pestle for going on ten years and love it. Naturally it gets a lot of use! 3.0 out of 5 stars Ok until it broke
This mortar and pestle worked really well for the first 9 months we had it. Definitely ground up lots and lots of tasty spices.

But then, one day as I was grinding up some flax seeds the pestle snapped in half in my hands. As you might guess, this greatly reduced its functionality. I'd like to recommend this product as it worked really well for a while, but...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great M&P - with caveats for some cuisines, March 21, 2008
This review is from: Fox Run 4-Inch Marble Mortar and Pestle (Kitchen)
I've had my marble mortar & pestle for going on ten years and love it. Naturally it gets a lot of use! One caution for those just embarking: if you love Indian and Asian cuisines as I do, Do Be Aware that marble M&P's (just like marble and granite countertops) ARE somewhat porous to very fine particles and therefore they WILL stain. Turmeric, in particular will provide a healthy yellow glow to your M&P long after you've used your curry blend. I don't like to wash my M&P in the dishwasher as the M&P will absorb the detergent and impart an odd flavor (or, on the occasion that I've felt compelled to do this, I rewash it without detergent with temperature on High immediately again).

Forewarned is forearmed. Or four-armed, or something... Enjoy!

I really wanted a little one I could put on the back of the oven, but this is nice, too. I like how heavy it is--it stays put while you, um, pestlize. I use it to crack peppercorns for soup and to grind dried herbes de Provence to powder for omelettes and such. It's 4 1/8 inches high and 4 inches across, with a bowl 3 inches across and 2 inches deep. The base is round, about 3 inches across. The pestle is 5 inches long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, February 20, 2007

I'm not sure what happened with the person who bought this and had it break the second time they used it, but I love it. It is heavy and sturdy, easy to clean with soap and water, and it does a great job crushing herbs and spices. What more can you ask for?

A very nice - heavy motar for it's size. Beautiful light marble color. Nice and smooth finish. I gave it a 4 star because I thought it is a little small.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grind those herbs, February 2, 2008

This mortar and pestle combo is great. We use it to create spicy rubs, some homemade curry powder, and fresh cracked peppercorns (mmmmmm).

Both pieces are made from a nice white marble, and are hefty enough for regular use. The foot on the base gives you a good place to grip whilst you bang away at your herbs.

We've got no complaints at all

10/10

Not too big, not too small, so you can keep it at the ready on your kitchen counter (I cover it loosely with a clear plastic bag from a bread loaf). The bowl is 'heavy' - very heavy, so it stays in place - you don't want to drop it on your bare foot.

It's a beautiful (and ancient-looking) piece of kitchen ware. I've crushed peppercorns using very slight pressure; mashed shelled walnuts and almonds into pastes; turned large turbinado sugar crystals into fine grains; same with salt crystals. It's also perfect for making onion powder from dried, minced onions.

It's easy to clean with soap and water or only water.

This mortar is a very nice size for home use, big enough for crushing/grinding plenty of spice and still easy on your counter space. Both pieces are a nice, heavy weight, and I get little to no dust/chalk even with heavier grinding and harder whole spices. Cleans up nicely with a quick hand wash; some spices can leave a faint stain, but vinegar or baking soda helps with that. This piece is also attractive enough to leave out, and actually looks very decorative on the counter when not in use--mine lives right next to my knife block and looks very nice in the kitchen. A bigger unit might be needed for restuarant/catering use, but this one is perfect in the home kitchen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mortar and pestle; many uses, September 1, 2009

This review is from: Fox Run 4-Inch Marble Mortar and Pestle (Kitchen)
This is a great mortar and pestle. The marble is wonderful for this because it makes the pestle heavier and easier to grind things with. The mortar is textured inside to allow easy grinding too.

As a chemist I have used a number of types of mortar and pestle (ceramic and other marble ones) and this one is a great one. I think it is a wonderful buy for the price. It was bigger than I thought it would be, but that's not a bad thing.

The marble makes it very sturdy; it's a great size for grinding a number of things. Right now I am using it to grind up my cat's medication so that I can blend it in with his food. The size of this set would also make it good for grinding a variety of food items.

The only problem with it is that the grooves inside the mortar are a bit deep and tend to retain some of whatever your grinding; not a big deal since you can just rinse it out, but could be an issue if you are dealing with small amounts of material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Great Marble Mortar and Pestle, May 27, 2011

Solid, heavy, deep and everything I could have hoped for and more in a mortar and pestle. I was using an antique mortar and pestle, but felt using this new one would save the old one from breaking. This thing will grind up just about anything you can put into it. I don't care if it gets stained by whatever is being ground down or made into paste - it shows it's still a very functional item despite it being invented 1000's of years ago. Some things you just can't improve on.
