A potato baking rod simply hastens the baking process, because heat is conducted to the center of the potato as well as the outside, causing more uniform baking. Set of 6 aluminum, 6-inch baking rods.

This is great in baked potatoes.
Hard Rock Girl
Even better was inserting them in turkey and chicken drumsticks / thighs.
Jeffrey Townsend
These are long enough to stick out on both ends of the potato.

I love baked potatoes and I have been looking for potato nails for years. While these are not the potato nails I remember as a child (perhaps those were actual nails), they do perform wonderfully. I taste the difference in oven or BBQ baked potatoes vs. microwaved ones. When I have the time, I much prefer a slow baked one over microwaved ones, any day. And with these rods, I never have the problem of the inside being undercooked (no matter how large the potato is). The rods distribute the heat perfectly to the center!

I love these nails. They work great and the potato comes out perfect and in less than an hour. They arrived quickly and I even bought some for a gift. LOve them.

I got the idea of these from the March issue of Men's Health; they recommended using it on a russet potato at 400 degrees for 45 minutes. It said the potato would be soft in the center, though that didn't quite happen for me. I suspect that to soften the potato will require more time; however, the potato definitely did have a nice even hot temperature when I pulled it out after 45 minutes. I went ahead and used two of these since my potato was larger; one on each end. Other than leaving the potato in a little longer next time, I think this worked great.

These are great for shortening the baking time of a potato. They are sharp - how else do you push them trough a raw potato? And, yes, a few had small spurs from what appears to be the elementary sharpening process - but they are made from aluminum, and the spurs were easily removed with a small kitchen sharpening stone. For the price, they are very functional and a great buy.

These are six inch potato 'nails'. One inch is take up by the triangular handle which provides more surface area and draws in the heat more readily than a straight nail...leaving five inches for the potato. Even with this device, plan on one hour cooking time and be prepare for a great, evenly cooked, baked potato. It's a thoughtful gift for someone starting up an apartment.

These are great. Makes perfect baked potatoes every time using big russet baking potatoes at 425 degrees for 40 minutes. Just clean the potatoes under running water with a stiff brush and sprinkle lots of salt all over them (because that's what the recipe I read 20 years ago said to do). Put them directly on the center rack - no baking sheet, foil or oil.

In my opinion you can't properly bake a potato without potato nails and for some reason I can't find them at my local grocery store. I've bought stainless steel nails before but they eventually rusted so I think aluminum is better. These are thinner than the stainless steel so are easier to pound into the potato.

Just what my mother wanted. Very solid with pointed tips. Works great on her baked potatoes. She lost some of her old ones and we weren't sure we could replace them with sufficient ones. Greatly surprised to find these were better than the ones she had from the 60's!
