Foxie is a lovely story - nuanced, authentic, emotional without being sappy or maudlin. The illustrations are gorgeous. I'm having a hard time giving it up to my grandnephew!

I bought this because I like the d'Aulaires' book - specifically the "Book of Greek Myths," "Leif the Lucky," "Wings for Per" and "Don't Count Your Chicks." I wasn't familiar with this title before purchasing it. This was an interesting choice for a reprint. The little dog starts off getting lost because he's scrawny & hungry and his owner is teasing him with a bone. When my son's old enough to understand the book, I'm curious to see if he'll want to know why the dog didn't just get enough food in the first place.

The d'Aulaire's have taken a Chekov story about a lost dog and turned it into this beautifully illustrated story of Foxie. Foxie's has a master that teases her and one day she gets lost. She ends up in the circus and while there she reunites with her young master who promises to treat her better! The story has a lot of discussion points for young children about teasing and cruelty, about taking care of your animal friends, and also about Foxie's adventures. The story may be a little too intense for sensitive children as Foxie is upset and afraid when she gets lost.
