Do not purchase this product if you require PDF/A compliant documents. This product is advertised with the capability for that but it is not true. I called the manufacturer and they admitted that they are working on a fix for this but do not know when they will complete that.

In other respects, this is a great product and very simply to use.

If you purchase this product be aware of the return policy of Amazon having to do with software, since once you open the package you may not be able to get a refund for it and the manufacturer (FOXIT) will have nothing to do with refunds if you did not acquire the product directly from them.

The issue with PDF/A compliancy is that if you have to move documents into other formats you will be checkmated since other software will fail to recognize the document or will become stalled forever trying to figure out what it is.

I needed this to convert some .docx and.html files into .pdf with compliance, so that the said file in image form only could be uploaded to Mobi software for making kindle files. Due to the lack of compliance, the whole project was mothballed and we are stuck with the software because we opened the package to install it. So be it. Don't make the same mistake.
You could call Foxit first to find out if they have the PDF/A compliant fix ready as an update.

If you need pdfs for other purposes which are not technical, then I recommend this product. It is great besides that one headache.

The company is negligent however since they should inform their big distributors like Amazon of the defect in the product because of making the PDF/A compliance claim which the product is not yeilding.

I am a frequent writer of MS Word documents and the ability to generate pdf formatted documents for distribution is essential. When I upgraded my PC, I didn't want to fork out the ca$h for Adobe Acrobat Pro (Which I have used for over 15 years), so I gave Foxit Phantom a try.

Does most everything I want it to that Acrobat does with the exception of file compression and forms generation.

File compression doesn't compress much.
Creating PDF forms is not as easy or intuitive as Acrobat.
Making edits to existing PDF files is cumbersome. NOTE: Acrobat does an equally poor job at this.

This is a tentative review based upon Ver, which I tested on a trial basis in March/April. I will be buying the current version within the next month or so. There are two features available with this software that Adobe kissed off starting at Version 9.

The first is that you open a single 'instance' of PhantomPDF and you can open several files within that instance (or window). The files show up as tabs, similar to how many web browsers 'present' their pages. Under AA9, that went away: Each file is in a separate 'instance'. This may not bother 'mousey' people, but it changes the entire way a 'keyboarder' works. Under my copy of AA8, I cycle through the open files using 'CTRL-Tab'; under AAX, I use 'ALT-Tab'. PhantomPDF allows me to work MY way; Adobe has made the change and, my understanding is, they will never 'go back.' I've not looked at all of the other alts to AA, but this is a key element for me.

A second key element is the use of 'classic' menu styles rather than the ribbon. Of the AA alternatives I reviewed, PhantomPDF was the only one that allowed the user to choose which interface to employ. I also do not care for the Task Pane that MS introduced to it's product line so many years ago. Between AA8 and AAX, Adobe made it practically impossible to build a decent toolbar suite, instead forcing users to 'just accept' that the task PAIN is here to stay. I use AAX on my netbook, but I still use AA8 on my desktop. I am much more proficient on the desktop and NOT just because of the larger KB and screen.

Another example of Adobe running off the rails is that AAX disallows 'docking' of the Properties toolbar, something I access ALL THE TIME. Because it floats over my documents, I'm stuck using an arcane toggle to turn it on/off.

I have used Foxit reader for some time, with mixed results. Nevertheless, I bought PhantomPDF to get a few other capabilities I could use. Unfortunately, PhantomPDF is a mess, especially the user interface.

For example, when I change the preferences and options, the next time I open the program, all the changes are gone. Every time, no matter what. Plus, when the program opens, it only covers one-half of the vertical screen space, so I have to resize the display EVERY SINGLE TIME. That alone makes the program nearly useless. Who has time for that? I've gone back to Foxit reader, at least after a dozen or so tries, I can make that sort of work.

The user manual does not discuss all the dozens of user options and preferences or how to save them. I tried to submit a trouble ticket on the Foxit Web site, only to find that the form doesn't work and submission is impossible. Same problem with Firefox and Internet Explorer, so the Web site is almost certainly at fault. I emailed a support request, but other than an auto reply, nothing has happened.

Then there are all the "features" available. Well and good, but what's the point if the basic program doesn't work?

Foxit claims that their program is "lean and mean", unlike Adobe. Not so, the installed footprint is nearly 600 mb, only slightly smaller than Adobe. The problem is the OCR feature, which adds upwards of 400 mg of files.

In short, I wasted my money. My rating of two stars is charitable.
