I highly recommend this case and the manufacturer.

This is a steel chassis with sound dampening materials covering both side panels and as such is quite heavy.

It's just solid, quiet and very easy to work with, which was what I wanted out of a case.

This is a large, heavy, well-built, attractive enclosure that's suited to almost every kind of build. It has space for something like seven fans. The interior room is on the high side of the mid-ATX standard with plenty of clearance for large tower heatsinks and multiple graphics cards. There are eight 3.5" hard disk slots. All of this is ideal for a power build, but also superlative for silent PCs. The case panels are very heavy and dampened with a cloth material. Most of the fan ports can be sealed if unused, and the enclosure is so solid that spinning 3.5" disks cause very little resonance.

The latter point is my interest. I'm all about silent computing. My go-to cases have been Antec's Solo and Sonata line. The former is similarly well-built, but cramped and far more difficult to build inside than this Fractal. The Solo II doesn't appear much of an improvement, so this is my new preferred enclosure.

A few notes:

* Fans. There are two included and they're both 140mm and very quiet. There's also a fan controller with at least three outputs wired into a 3-position switch in the front of the case. All fans appear to use whatever voltage is set.

* Cable management. Large rubber grommets line the motherboard tray. With cable ties, I had no trouble finding room for aesthetically pleasing cable runs. The only exception was a USB 3.0 cable intended to plug into the back of the case. There are no grommets leading out, so I had to remove the vertical PCI-style slot cover on the back-right. The space the cable isn't filling, I sealed with a small piece of flexible black foam available at craft stores. There was adequate room behind the motherboard tray for Molex connectors and the thick 24-pin power cable.

* Drive support.

In general the case was as advertised. There were problems, however. Since none of the reviews I read before purchasing this case mentioned these specific problems, it is possible that I simply got a slightly bad one. None of these issues prevented me from using the case, but they are worth mentioning:

1) The "rivet warts" created by the rivets used to hold the case together pushed up too high, preventing my power supply from mating properly with screw-holes in the case; had to take a Dremel to them before I could mount the power supply.

2) The case comes with four pre-attched pads that act as vibration dampers for the power supply; one of mine was missing, and I had to tear one of the remaining three in half to level the power supply.

3) As indicated in the reviews, the filter for the bottom air intake is a high-quality mesh that can be easily removed for cleaning. What the reviews do not tell you is that it is not so easy to insert it again. The frame for the mesh is not rigid enough to slide back in. It tends to droop and miss the second set of guide rails. This means that you will probably have to lift the case up so that you can guide the screen by hand, which sort of defeats the purpose of making it removable in the first place.

4) The company makes a point about how there are attachment points for two SSDs on the back of the mother board tray, This is true, but what they don't mention is that you have to remove the motherboard before you can add or remove an SSD. In my book, this makes them useless. Not that big a deal; this beast has plenty of drive bays (so long as you aren't installing one of the really, really long video cards and have to pull the second set of drive bays to make room).

I've owned many computer cases over the years, and I've tended to stick with the older manufacturers that have always been making cases like Cooler Master, Thermaltake, and Antec. I watched some youtube reviews and read up on some tech sites about this one from Fractal Design as I was looking for something sleek and slightly understated, that was also very sophisticated as well as silent. Plethora of adjectives aside, Fractal Design has really delivered on the Define R4. I purchased this case from another site that has something to do with not old offspring of chickens, for a very reasonable price of $79.99 w/Free Shipping. Granted after I built my computer I can say that I'd gladly pay $109.99 or whatever the retail cost is given the build quality and aesthetics.

Pros:
+ Build Quality. This is a steel chassis with sound dampening materials covering both side panels and as such is quite heavy. I never understood the allure of the ultra lightweight aluminum chassis. It's a desktop computer, you're going to put it in one place and not move it around. If you need a LAN box, build one. Every aspect of this case screams quality, from the thick heavy metal side panels, to every joint or riveted metal connection, and even the drive bays are high quality metal.
+ Aesthetics. I used to want a case with a big window in the side panel, cold cathodes, LED fans, UV reactive paint, the whole nine yards. Now that I find myself closer to 30 than I am to 20, It really feels like a computer from Toys R Us when you have all those glowy lights coming out of it. The Define R4 is very sleek and understated. I absolutely love the design of the case. The front door is a brushed metal looking thick plastic door, and the paint on the chassis and side panels is really high quality black.
