This pretty, full-color book shows beginners and intermediate users exactly what Fractal Design (now MetaCreations) Painter, the natural-media paint program, can do. The first half of the book teaches you about Painter's interface and how you can customize the program. You learn how to use Painter's color and brush tools; create and manipulate selections, masks, Floaters, and shapes; use the Image Hose; apply, create, and edit paper textures; use special effects such as lighting, Image Warp, Orientation, and Focus; clone images, brushes, and transformations; use Mosaics and Tessellations; record and play scripts and create script libraries; work with QuickTime and AVI videos and create new movies; and use Painter to collaborate with coworkers over a network using Net Painter. The chapter on output explains how to use monitor-calibration techniques, export files, and print to a variety of printers. All of the chapters in this part of the book include screen shots and thorough explanations of each feature at hand. At the end of each chapter, a Practice Exercise allows you to apply what you've learned.

The second half of the book features highlights of six artists and presents step-by-step explanations of how each one created a particular piece of art. An appendix shows samples of the texture, pattern, and nozzle libraries that are available from MetaCreations. A CD-ROM includes stock photos, a demo version of Painter 5 for Macintosh, and sample animation frames.

This is a great book to learn Painter 5 with. It explains each function of the program. Getting this book and the Wow! book would enable you to get pretty advanced with Painter on your own. It doesn't go into detail as to how you can execute certain special effects. For that, you need to get other books but this is a book which would enable you to have a sound knowledge of the capabilities and the functions of Painter and that is very essential toward mastering an application.

Since I bought Painter 5 bunded,I didn't get a basic instruction book. This book is very basic and comes with extremely helpful lessons to get you started.

This is a nicely designed book with all the basic information on using the Painter 5. For a beginner this is a must have book, however, do not expect to learn much if you are an intermediate or expert user. Actually, the book itself deserves 4 stars, but the included CD lowers the value for Windows users -- while the demo Painter 5 for Mac is there, the CD does not include the demo version of Painter 5 for Windows.
