Book Description

0127039708 978-0127039701 July 7, 1998 1
This book presents the analysis of textured images using fractal geometry, and discusses its application to imaging science and computer vision when modeling natural objects. The authors explore the methods which can be used to simulate, analyze, and interpret coherent images, and demonstrate a new approach which segments each image into regions of similarity that can be characterized by a random fractal with a given fractal dimension.
Fractal Geometry in Digital Imaging is based on a research project, but has been written with a broad coverage and user friendly math to make the book accessible to a wider audience. It includes real world experiences and applications using the techniques described.

* Discusses the analysis of textured images using fractal geometry
* Explores the methods used to simulate, analyze, and interpret coherent images
* Contains coverage of real world experiences and applications
* Written in a user friendly style

From the Back Cover

This book is concerned with the theory and application of fractal geometry in digital imaging. It is divided into four parts:

. Part 1 deals with the general theory of fractal
geometry and focuses attention on the theory of
random scaling fractals.

. Part II covers a fundamental inverse problem,
that of using fractals to segment images.

. Part III looks at the design of algorithms that
can be used to create or synthesize images -
painting with fractals.

. Part IV considers the inverse of the processes
discussed in part III and introduces the reader
to the role that fractal geometry plays in
image compression.

Throughout the book, a series of new approaches to
defining fractals are illustrated, such as the analysis of the fractal power spectrum and the use of fractional differentials. Several new algorithms and applications are also discussed and applied to real life images.

Fractal Geometry in Digital Imaging will appeal to postgraduates, researchers and practitioners in image processing, mathematics and computing, information technology and engineering. It provides an Internet address where readers can find data which complements the published material and will help keep them up-to-date with developments in this field.

Until relatively recently (i.e. the last 200 years), nearly all concepts of geometry - once a cornerstone of mathematics - were based on Greek geometry, which ranks as a major achievement of the human intellect for reasons both mathematical and historical, both practical and aesthetic. Read the first page
