Fresh Territory Breeds an Exceptional Release for Abigor.,
By Astomis (Burnsville, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fractal Possession (Dig) (Audio CD)
Abigor hasn't released a disc this well formulated and executed since Nachthymnen. I do enjoy their entire catalog, save for the primary demo recordings, but I acknowledge that bewteen '96 and '06 Abigor wasn't releasing any astounding material (or at least anything better than their previous recordings). I think they knew they wanted to switch things up when they released Satanized, but had to test the grounds before they felt comfortable with their new experimental sound.
Having gone beyond a bland cascading wall of synthwashed, harsh black metal, Abigor steps into a new skin that is more reminiscent of mid-career Dodheimsgard or post-Euronymous Mayhem. Avante Garde and experimenting with some warped guitar tones, Abigor still attends to some blistering riffing accompanied by a new vocalist (AR) who fits well into the mix with a confident, throaty rasp. The drumming is spot on too, which is an improvement from the slightly shaky Satanized recording. I was greatly looking forward to this disc coming out, and I wasn't let down. Abigor is back on the top of their game, and it looks like they're going to keep going.
