About the Author

Augustus Y. Napier was born in Decatur, Georgia, in 1938 and graduated from Wesleyan University with a B.A. in English. After deciding to become a therapist through a personal therapy experience, he earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of North Carolina. During an internship in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he began to work with Dr. Whitaker as a student co-therapist, an experience which formed the basis of this book. Dr. Napier later served on the faculties of the Psychiatry Department and the Child and Family Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin. He now directs The Family Workshop, a family therapy training institute in Atlanta, Georgia, where he works frequently with his wife, Margaret, who is also a family therapist. A frequent consultant, he is the author of numerous papers and of The Fragile Bond, published by Harper & Row in 1988. The Napiers have three children.

More About the Author

Family therapist Augustus (Gus) Napier was born in Decatur, GA, in 1938. He was educated at Wesleyan University, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At Wisconsin, he studied with Carl Whitaker, M.D., with whom he wrote The Family Crucible (HarperCollins, 1978). In 1978 he founded The Family Workshop, a treatment and training institute in Atlanta, where he practiced with his wife, family therapist Margaret Napier, and other colleagues. The Fragile Bond (HarperCollins, 1988) describes the couple's work together and their ideas about marriage. Mostly retired from practice, he and Margaret now live in the mountains of western North Carolina. Several years ago Gus re-discovered his early interest in photography and poetry, and he has recently published a new book, Convergence: Photographs and Poems by Augustus Napier. His poems and photographs are juxtaposed to form "units," which he calls "photo/poems," in which each works synchronously with the other.

5.0 out of 5 stars useful for anyone, October 26, 2002
This review is from: The Fragile Bond: In Search of an Equal, Intimate and Enduring Marriage (Paperback)
I read this book years ago and have referred to it many times. This book shows how the family we grew up in affects the marriage we have now. It also gives information on real case study couples and how they worked out their differences. I have given this book to others who found it tremendously helpful and it would probably be a great wedding present!
