This new work on Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806) is being released at the time of the Metropolitan Museum's major retrospective on the French Rococo painter, which opened in February 1988. Ashton ( New York Times , Cooper Union) describes the intellectual and artistic currents that influenced the painter, emphasizing his sojourns in Italy, "independent temperament," and unique treatment of light, atmosphere, and brushwork that foreshadowed trends in 19th-century art. He also explores the impact on the artist of 18th-century painting, theater, and landscaping.
