The FRAM Ultra Oil Filter is designed to keep your engine clean under the most extreme of conditions. The filter utilizes a cellulose/synthetic filter media blend, layered in two plies and separated by a metal screen. Along with its anti-drainback valve, which holds a reserve of oil in the filter to help protect the engine during startups, this feature allows the Ultra Oil Filter to reach a 97% dirt trapping efficiency rating and deliver up to 10,000 miles of engine protection. Additional features include easy installation and the non-slip Sure Grip outer shell, guaranteed to stay in-hand in even the most slippery of conditions.

Ultimate Engine Protection

Advanced features built into the FRAM Ultra oil filter allow for ultimate engine protection, regardless of how tough the conditions. First, there is its filter media. Cellulose is the most commonly used filter material utilized in oil filters. The strength of this natural material is that it presents a random and irregular field of fibers to motor oil, trapping dirt, yet allowing oil to pass though. But as good a filtering agent as cellulose is, by itself, on average cellulose can only deliver about 80% dirt-trapping efficiency. Like many FRAM oil filters the Ultra oil filter improves on the strengths of cellulose by blending it with microscopic glass synthetic fibers. Together this composite filtering media creates small windows that are able to trap the smaller dirt particles missed by other oil filters, without affecting the flow of oil. The Ultra oil filter then sets itself even further apart from the competition by arranging these media in two plies built into the filter and reinforced with a metal screen. This allows it to trap and hold more than double the dirt of leading economy oil filter brands' average and achieve 97% dirt trapping efficiency.

In addition to filtering media designed to protect engines while they run, the FRAM Ultra oil filter also works to protect your engine when the your car is idle via its built-in silicone anti-drainback valve. Designed to hold a reserve of oil in the filter, this features helps protect the engine during startups by allowing the engine access clean, filtered oil at a time when its components may be lacking it, and need it most.

Quick and Easy Installation with "Sure Grip"

The FRAM Ultra Oil Filter utilizes the FRAM exclusive no-slip Sure Grip feature. This textured application to the top of the filter makes it much easier to grip during installation and removal - even with oily hands. Steps for installation of the FRAM Ultra Oil Filter are simple and include:

  • Unscrew the old oil filter and clean mounting base.
  • Apply film of clean oil to filter gasket. Do not use grease.
  • Screw new filter on until gasket reaches base. Then tighten according to instructions on filter using tightening guide markers.
  • Add oil to "full" on dipstick. Idle engine for five minutes and check for leaks.

Warranty

About FRAM

Today FRAM is known as America's number one oil filter brand, and the FRAM team continues to manufacture and market a variety of quality oil, air and fuel filters, as well as many automotive accessories such as PCV valves, crankcase filters and transmission modulators.

1. VS LEADING ECONOMY FILTERS' AVERAGE. FRAM Engine Protection ratings are based on multiplying an oil filter's dirt-trapping efficiency by its dirt-holding capacity.
2. Honeywell testing of filter efficiency and capacity of models equivalent to PH8A, 3387A and 6607 under ISO 4548-12 for particles > 20 microns. Engine protection is the FRAM measure of a filter's ability to not just trap dirt but hold it for the life of the filter.
3. Honeywell testing of filter efficiency (using FRAM XG3387A and XG8A average) and dirt holding capacity (using XG8A average only) and their leading economy filter equivalents under ISO 4548-12 for particles > 20 microns.
4. Follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle's owner's manual. 10,000-mile change interval under normal driving conditions using fully synthetic motor oil.

* Note: All FRAM filters are compatible with all the oil types listed.

Product Description

Oil that lubricates and cools the engine is picked up by the engine's oil pump, cleaned by the oil filter, and reused. It is vital that any dirt or contamination picked up by the circulating oil be removed before it is pumped back into the engine.

This is a surprisingly good extended-life oil filter from Fram and works as well as any other from a reputable company. This filter is made for Ford Modular engines and replaces the Motorcraft FL820S. It is a fairly high capacity for its size and is rated for 10,000 miles. The bypass is triggered at 12PSI.

Many of Fram's products sunk drastically in quality as the company seemed to dedicate more money to advertising and less to the products. Fortunately this filter slipped past that and when disassembled you'll find metal end caps where lower end Fram parts use cardboard. You'll find neat multilayered pleats that fit tightly into the package where lower end filters would use uneven and poorly fitting ones. This is a good, well-built filter and should easily do 10,000 miles using a high quality synthetic oil.

We ran it for 5,000 miles on a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis and it did its job properly. Normally we use the smaller standard-life filter but this was the only one available at a local store in a pinch. The only issue of note in our case is that it's a rather big filter and must be tipped on its side and maneuvered through a tight space during installation and removal. This can be particularly messy during removal if you're not careful. Depending on where and how your filter is mounted this may or may not be an issue.

Fram's low end filters are junk. Typically they use paper endcaps. I checked the website and this filter is what you want for a quality, durable filter. dual-layer synthetic media with wire mesh support. Metal end caps. Silicone drainback valve. Your gonna pay $6-7 more for a comparable filter from another brand. These filters tell me FRAM may be on it's way to a comeback. I've always been partial to Purolator PUR one filter's but for a couple bucks more to get dual-layer synthetic media and wire mesh, I'm sold. Fram claims 15k miles on this filter. Regardless even if your using a premium synthetic oil, I wouldn't go over 5k. Also these are USA made!

I use this filter in my 2007 Ford Mustang GT and my 1994 Ford Bronco (they both use the same filter size/type). This filter works perfectly fine for my needs and is much cheaper than shelling out 14.00 or more for an oil filter. I use synthetic oil in all of my vehicles with no issues and NO mechanics to tell me that I should NOT be using fram. Beats not changing your oil, doesn't it? I change mine every 3 Months 3,000 miles no matter what oil brand/type/filter combination I use.

I have been using Fram products for many years and have never had any issues. This will be the first time for this filter for full synthetic oil. I have no doubts that Fram will deliver excellent results like always.

As the title says, I paid for an Ultra and was sent an old stock Extended guard. And before someone says they are the same they are not according to standard ISO testing. The Ultra is slightly better and is why I bought it, otherwise I would have ordered a K&N.

Does what it is supposed to do, keeps the oil clean. Easy to put on, and easy to get off when it's time to change the filter or the oil. In this case I had to change the filter since I am using 100% Synthetic Oil good for 15K.
