Great book for old school framing techniques, February 19, 2011
This review is from: Frame It: A Complete Do-It-Yourself Guide to Picture Framing (Hardcover)
This is a great book for anyone interested in the old school methods of picture framing with hand tools and learning the basics. It's not for anyone who is interested in framing art with modern electric framing equipment. This book is completely old schools. Nails, Brads, hand saw, mitre clamps, egg beater hand drill, hammers, glue, tape, hand mitre saw, mitre box, and you get the picture. I like old reads like this, because the focus is onstress skill and craftsmanship. Anyone can be taught how to use all the fancy pricey framing saws and other pricey modern framing equipment that make the techniques in this book seem like ancient history. I own a v nailer, large mat cutter, and a assortment of expensive framing equipment. I often need just simple frames built and often use the hand tool approach in this book to accomplish the job. If you were interested in pumping out a 100 framing orders a week this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a modern book on commercial framing and a mass produced framing operation, this is not the book for you. However if you are a craftsman and value old fashion hand tools and woodworking this is your book. If you are interested in knowing the history and process behind picture framing this is a classic book. Another thing is that this book maybe old school, but it allows a person to get a feel for picture framing using tools most DIYers already have in their shop. I purchased a used hard copy for a couple bucks + shipping.
