Book Description

August 17, 2001

Framemaker 6: Beyond the Basics discusses holistic approaches that save time, solve problems globally, and make creative uses of FrameMaker's features. Since FrameMaker is intended for large document creation, this approach is advantageous, even critical. Through real-world scenarios, the book explores typical tasks technical document creators perform daily. Each chapter provides principles and techniques needed to perform each task, along with tips on best practices and how to achieve repeatable outcomes. Rather than covering everything about the software, the book focuses on the challenges FrameMaker users face, helping them apply efficient, innovative solutions.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

FrameMaker is a difficult product to master, and Lisa Jahred's mastery of the product's capabilities is something she neither takes for granted nor assumes others to possess. Her years of teaching have trained her to constantly evaluate how readers can best learn: what level of detail to include for the intermediate-advanced audience, what examples best clarify FrameMaker's complex functionality, and what tips will be invaluable to the professional user. Her chapter FrameMaker Headaches is just one result of her constant evaluation of and reshaping of her manuscript to meet audience needs. This level of care is reflected in every chapter and on every page; while the reader will not have the advantage of hearing her ongoing conversations on taking advantage of FrameMaker's features, this book, the product of her conclusions, is the next best thing.

From the Author

FrameMaker is famous for its powerful document-publishing features and steep learning curve. I wrote this book because after 10 years of experience working with FrameMaker from many angles, I’ve seen the struggles that users often encounter in daily documentation tasks and wanted to make FrameMaker more accessible to users, without feeling overwhelmed.

I wanted to share a holistic view of FrameMaker to provide an understanding of how various features work together to produce an outcome. I wrote each chapter to include a comprehensive overview of each topic and how it’s handled in FrameMaker, as well as principles and techniques needed to perform tasks, along with tips on best practices. I also provide practical examples with steps to help users apply efficient, innovative solutions to documentation challenges. After all these years, FrameMaker remains my favorite document-publishing program. In case you wondered, I wrote this book in FrameMaker and it remained in FrameMaker during the entire production process. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power Users Rejoice!, September 11, 2001
This review is from: FrameMaker 6: Beyond the Basics (Paperback)
I use "Framemaker 6" eight hours a day, five days a week. I am a power user. This is the book I have been waiting for. It streamlined my everyday procedures and took me step by step uncharted territory I was afraid to use before. Even a power user FM^ can be intimidating. The closest I can come to how I felt after reading the book is it is like having a personal trainer. I accomplish more with less effort, and my documents look great. I am not kidding, FM6 can stress out, I feel better. When I get backed in a corner I use this book first to resolve my problems. I subscribe to the Adobe Tech support. This book has helped me in situations that had Adobe TS stumped. I recommend they buy a copy or even better, include it with the software.

This book works on so many levels. The first time I read the book it was like taking a very informative college level class in FM. I learned a more streamlined approach to template setup that eliminated so many little annoying problems. For the first time I have FM..books that have no error log listings!

I also use it like a reference book. Unlike the user manual you get with FM 6, this one is truly useful. I prefer it for several reasons. It is filled with workable universal examples that are complete, all the steps are there. The format makes it easy to use and find topics.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Overwhelming Task, August 25, 2001
By
Karen G. Cohen (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: FrameMaker 6: Beyond the Basics (Paperback)
I am fairly new to the FrameMaker world and was involuntarily charged with the task of putting together a template. Needless to say I was overwhelmed. This book was good timing. It gave me the information I needed to get through some of the more difficult tasks like figuring out what all that header and variable stuff is about. I'm still no expert but I was able to get the stuff in the template working just fine from the teaching in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on FrameMaker 6, August 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: FrameMaker 6: Beyond the Basics (Paperback)
This book has rounded out my understanding of some of the details of FrameMaker 6 that I was lacking. It's well organized, with comprehensive explanations of the how and why of commands and features before going into examples. One thing I particularly liked was that the author is very enthusiastic and insightful. Overall this book is well worth it and I recommend it to anyone who already has a basic understanding of FrameMaker
