Book Description

Tory Travers/David Alvarez Mysteries August 1998
Answers are few and far between when El Paso Police Detective David Alvarez is called to investigate an unexplained collapse in the residence of an affluent matron. The dead home owner and another unidentified body are discovered in the basement in what appears to be a concealed room. If this isn't enough to figure out--a live, unidentified infant is discovered upstairs.

When Alvarez calls in engineer Tory Travers to figure out what happened to cause the collapse, the media turns the case into a circus. Soon Alvarez is dealing with an alleged drug king, his DEA shadow, a mystery woman who unapologetically works outside the law, and Tory's inclination to go searching for solutions on her own. While Tory and her foreman look for the builder of the secret room, her son and the infant son of Alvarez's partner are threatened if they don't drop the case.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Schumacher's meaty prose and content, cliffhanger plot, mordant wit, and memorable characters will have readers clamoring for more! El Paso detectives David Alvarez and Scott Faulkner investigate a real puzzler: two dead women discovered in the collapsed secret room of a mansion and a live baby left upstairs. Alvarez immediately consults structural engineer (and incipient love interest) Tory Travers (see Engineered for Murder, Write Way, 1996) for help with the case. In Omaha, NE, meanwhile, a DEA agent watches over a slippery drug lord and his dissatisfied trophy wife and new baby. Nice subplot complications, wry observations, and constant movement makes this an excellent choice for all mystery collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moonlighting engineer is top-notch mystery writer., September 7, 1998
This review is from: Framework for Death: A Mystery (Tory Travers/David Alvarez Mysteries) (Hardcover)
Aileen Shumacher's second entry in the Tory Travers series demonstrates that she is no one-book wonder. A fascinating "locked room" mystery combined with knotty legal and ethical issues as well as fascinating characters makes "Framework for Death" a must-read for all mystery fans. It's not all serious, however. Schumacher provides witty dialogue and many hearty laughs. Highly recommended.

Second book in a series by this author. Better than the first. Female engineer (Travers) is an unusual role model (but about time!). Watching the relationship between Travers and Alvarez grow makes for a good read. Dialogue is witty and entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Engineered for Murder, September 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Framework for Death: A Mystery (Tory Travers/David Alvarez Mysteries) (Hardcover)
I completely enjoyed Aileen Schumacher's second book, Framework for Death. It grabbed my attention from the first page and kept my interest all the way through. The mix between Tory and Alvarez is fun to watch, but the relationship did not overshadow the mystery itself. I found the story to be engaging and thought provoking. The conclusion was satisfying but realistic and had me guessing until the end.

An excellent book, I highly recommend it.
