Host Rick Steves and his buddy Steve Smith, who lives in France part of the year, take on the regions of Dordogne and the French Riviera with an eye for economy and a feel for the less-beaten path. First up is a canoe trip down the Dordogne River, with castles ensconced on either side. As the pair traipse through traffic-free village streets, Steves shares history while Smith locates a gourmet restaurant charging half what its Parisian counterpart would. They hit the Nazi-destroyed ghost town of Oradour-sur-Glane, prehistoric cave paintings near Font de Gaume, and study the works of Toulouse Lautrec in his hometown of Albi. The 13th-century walled city of Carcassonne begins the tour of the next region. Even in "the jewel of France," Steves looks for bargains. Who else would suggest a youth hostel on the French Riviera? After visiting a family-run winery and ruins of a religious group's mountaintop hideout from the Catholics in the 1300s, the pair finally end up on the Cote d'Azure. Cobblestone streets, the Alps on one side, the Mediterranean on the other--it's no wonder Renoir, Matisse, Cezanne, Picasso, and Chagall all lived there. This 50-minute tape's finale takes in Cannes, Venice, Nice, and even spends one-and-a-half minutes in Monaco. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Unfortunately, I am unable to review the content of this tape because it would not play. Judging by the look and feel of the cassette, the producers decided to cut manufacturing costs to the bone--this is junk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great trip to France with Rick!, February 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: France: the Dordogne Region, the French Riviera [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Here's another great travel video from Rick Steves. In this one he travels with friend and Francophile Steve Smith to the Dordogne region and the Riviera. The great cultural variety of France never ceases to amaze me, and Rick Steves is able to capture the essence of the various regions of France in his videos. They really are the next best thing to a trip!

If you're planning to go to France, or if you just like to dream about it, these videos are for you.
