About the Author

France is like a second home to Darwin Porter, a native of North Carolina, and Danforth Prince, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Both of these writers know their destination well, as they’ve made many annual trips through France since Prince worked for the Paris bureau of the New York Times and renovated part of a 14th-century chateau in the Loire Valley. Porter, a former bureau chief for the Miami Herald and a survivor of a successful career in TV advertising, is the author of the definitive upcoming biography The Secret Life of Humphrey Bogart (1899–1931), which has been praised for its fine behind-the scenes depiction of Hollywood at the dawn of the talkies. As one critic said, “At last, Darwin Porter reveals what was really under that trenchcoat.” Jointly, Porter and Prince are the coauthors of many Frommer guides, including Frommer’s France, Frommer’s Paris, and Frommer’s Provence & the Riviera.

Cheryl A. Pientka is a freelance journalist and literary scout. She’s the author of both editions of Paris For Dummies and coauthor of Frommer’s Europe from $70 a Day. A graduate of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the University of Delaware, she lives in New York when she can’t be in Paris. Outside of her writing and professional career, she supports her pet causes: the Animal Haven shelter in Flushing, New York, and strayfromtheheart.org in New York City.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Dummy Friendly, January 24, 2005
By
This review is from: France for Dummies, Second Edition (Paperback)
This book stinks. It lacks entire regions of France. For example, it omits the Dordogne, which is a large, economical for the traveler, region of beautiful countryside replete with prehistoric cave art and medieval castles. There are no photographs. Descriptions of lodgings are few and good budget lodgings nearly nonexistent. Despite having such little information, the book is large, thick, and heavy. This is not a book to carry around with you during your travels. I'm not sure who this book is designed for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, May 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: France for Dummies (Paperback)
France for Dummies was an excellent read. This book was very in depth without being too confusing. I recommend this book for anyone who is not "the seasoned traveler." I am traveling to France for a month and I will make sure I keep this book with me at all times for reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, January 28, 2008
This review is from: France For Dummies (Paperback)
I am a native of France and I found this book extremely useful. It contains much valuable information on the technicalities that can make or break a trip.( For example: how to get to and from the airport, how to buy a bus or subway ticket, how do obtain train schedules, etc...) As far as sights and accommodations, I agree with a previous reviewer that it is a bit lacking. Nevertheless, it is a book I will definitely take with me on my next trip despite its large size. One thing that I appreciated is that although it shows some humor, it is not so filled with cheap jokes (like a couple of books of the same kind that I've read) as to make the content more annoying than it is useful.
