Prelude's Canadian Songbird,
By muzyksohlchile (Orangeburg, SC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: France Joli - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This disc is a definite treat for those who remember or who are simply ultimate fans of talented songbird, France Joli. Not only was she one of Prelude's premiere stars but also, in my opinion, one of music's most underrated female vocalists. What better way to capture the true essence of Joli's dynamic voice than this ultimate definitive collection.

Most of the tracks are in full length and 12" versions. One can find some ballad/s, too. If you're looking for a Joli album, then this one's for you.

What a voice!,
This review is from: France Joli - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
France Joli is one of the most underappreciated voices in music history. Dismissed by most as a "disco singer", the girl could definitely hold her own with Streisand or Dion. "Heart To Break A Heart" evokes such strong and powerful memories for me. Her first two albums were classics. Too bad the major labels didn't know what to do with her.

Canadian Disco Diva of the late 70's,
By Ian O'connor "Connor" (Istanbul TURKEY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: France Joli - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
That's what I call Club music and Joli fortunately made some of the best melodies but for a very short time and she disappeared. For those who love late 70's early 80's, I am sure they all have it, for those who haven't, they better order one before it is unavailable.

Great CD!!!!,
This review is from: France Joli - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This CD has France Joli greatest hits from the Disco era. It is NOT the live performances, as in the other CD's here. These are the studio version cuts - full length. So if you enjoy her music, this CD is the one to get.

Old Disco Classics,
This review is from: France Joli - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
If you love the old studio 54 dance classics then you know Fran Joli is it. I love the old disco. This CD has at least 4-5 of her classics you will know and love. If you are between 38-44 then you know How Could You Have The Heart To Break a Heart and Come to Me. I could not get these songs on I tunes for whatever reason. I searched high and low to get her music. The only place I found it was on amazon and I paid 12 dollars and change. They sent it to me and it was in perfect condition. I played it and it was awesome to hear some good old dance music.

One of the Disco-era's GREATEST singers!!!,

This review is from: France Joli - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)It has been many years since Canadian-singer France Joli first hit the Disco/Dance Music scene at just 16 years old back in 1979 with "Come To Me", her only U.S. Top 40 hit by the way. I can remember dancing to this song in the clubs back in 1979 along with her followup club hits, "Playboy", "Don't Stop" and "Let Go", all of which were pulled from her debut album. When you would hear France Joli's vocals, you could swear that the singer was much more mature than a 16 year old, and France was exactly that! Also considering the fact that the production on these earlier songs and those to follow, was so sharp and polished, even by today's music recording standards. Her follow-up album, 1980's "Tonight", showcased Ms. Joli's vocals even more and also broadened her musical genre past her classic "disco sound" from her debut album. My most memorable tracks from "Tonight" were the dance-floor hits, "Feel Like Dancing" and "The Heart To Break The Heart", which in my opinion, is probably one of the most beautiful songs ever to come out of the late 70's disco-era. It is unfortunate though, that at the time of the release of "Tonight" in 1980, disco was already taking a major backlash at radio here in the states, and because of this, dance music started to transition at this time into the "post-disco" era of the early 1980's. Because of this timing, "Tonight" and its dance tracks did not receive the radio airplay at Urban and Top 40 that it truly deserved. Classic Urban Contemporary radio station, the original 92KTU in New York was probably the only station in the country at the time, that still managed to hold on to the disco sound to a greater extent and did give "The Heart To Break The Heart" and "Feel Like Dancing" substantial airplay at the time of the album's release. This greatest hits collection recaptures all these great dance music memories and also includes France's most memorable club hit, 1981's "Gonna Get Over You", with her Spanish version of this song included on here as well. I can remember hearing "Gonna Get Over You" many times on the original 98.7 KISS-FM (WRKS in New York) during the summer of '81. This song is probably one of Ms. Joli's greatest and most memorable songs of the early 80's post-disco era. At the time of its release, her record label (New York-based Prelude Records) was already starting to see somewhat of a decline in the industry during this period and probably accounted for this song not receiving any radio airplay outside of New York. Thank God though, that "Gonna Get Over You" was still a major hit in the clubs at that time. The only reason I am giving this collection 4 stars rather than 5 is because Unidisc failed to include the original version of "The Heart To Break The Heart" and replaced it here with the remix version. The original version can of course be found on France's "Tonight" CD, which is by far, the superior version of this song. Ms. Joli would later record 3 more albums in the 80's, release 2 more dance singles in the 90's and has recently released a new album in 2009, which includes her 90's club hits "Touch" and "Breakaway". This greatest hits collection however, only captures her material from the disco era through the early 80's. She continues to perform today at radio events and regional disco-festivals. |
