This review is from: Francesca Woodman: Photographic Work (Paperback)
This book is the companion to the 1986 exhibition of Francesca Woodman's photography at Wesley Colleg Museum and Hunter College Art Gallery. Woodman's work is incredibly powerful. A photographic prodigy, she imbued her work with insight, power, longing and sorrow. Her imagery of herself calls forth important discussions of meaning and value of what it is to be a woman, feminity, otherness and exclusion. By the time of her death at 22 in 1978, Woodman had created a compelling body of work that cannot be ignored by anyone looking for non-political interpretations of the reality of the feminine. The accompanying catalogue essay by Abigail Solomon-Godeau is helpful in that it places Woodman's work within a philosophical, critical and theoritical framework. Too bad this book is out of print. If you find a copy, snatch it up.
