This review is from: Francesco da Milano (Audio CD)
This is Hopkinson Smith at his very best - it will not dissapoint. Smith's tone is always sumptuos, but in this earlier repertoire it seems to work better; Smith's gentle and delicate tone allows for very fine shaping of lines within countrepuntal textures. The disc is resplendant with the most richly polyphonic lute music around, balanced well with dances, pavans and Smith's own reconstructions (based on Francesco's tunes) of possible dances from Italy in the 16th C.This is a must for anyone who plays lute or guitar, for anyone who likes countrepuntal music, Glenn Gould, harpsichord, drinking water, breathing, eating, or simply anyone interested in the poetry of music from the past.
