Though I think the collection of interviews with David Sylvester is more comprehensive and perhaps deeper record of Bacon's work and thought, this book also contains many important gems. Archimbaud was a close friend of Bacon's and that comes across in the interviews--they seem to have a certain shared familiarity. At times, Bacon even poses questions back to MA, and his answers are quite informative in their own right. Of course, as with anything Bacon says concerning himself and his art, Bacon often says things in here that directly contradict (or at least significantly complicate) statements he made in other places (the interviews with Sylvester). This is, however, no fault, but rather another fascinating characteristic of Bacon. Additionally, this work is distinct from the Sylvester interviews in that Bacon engages here in many discussions of the history of painting, literature, and music. Perhaps it was due to his failing health (Bacon died before the interviews could be completed), but you really get a great sense of Bacon's wariness of praising or canonizing anyone in the history of art, including himself.

Overall, if you're a fan of Bacon's work or are interested in 20th century painting, this book is a pleasure to read and a great resource.

This selection of interviews has many good things about it. It spends a lot of time asking about the relationship between music and painting. Not through the natural flow of the interview but instead at the initiative of Archiumbaud. To do this is to move off the track of the main point which is the painting of Francis Bacon.
I doubt that anyone hears music when they look at Bacon's work. The other book of interviews is better but this one is still well worth reading.

Interesting for artists to hear Bacon's reasoning behind his creative process.

this is the best book so far to describe Bacon's thought's and inner working's of his creations.I bought this title in a book store, but wanted to say that it's hard to come by and may be out of print. If you want to know the artist, if choosing one book, this is the book to have.
