Book Description

This ambitious and important book provides the first truly general account of Francis Bacon as a philosopher. It explores in detail how and why Bacon attempted to transform the largely esoteric discipline of natural philosophy into a public practice through a program in which practical science provided a model that inspired many from the 17th to the 20th centuries. This book will be recognized as a major contribution to Baconian scholarship of special interest to historians of early modern philosophy, science, and ideas.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cannot read notes in Kindle version, July 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review concerns solely the electronic formatting of this book, not its content (its scholarship or interest).
I am unable to view many of the footnotes. By this I mean that the superscript note number does not function as a link: when I move the cursor over it, there is no way to click on it (except to highlight it, as one can highlight any text whatsoever.) For instance, in Chapter One, notes 3, 5, 11, 17, 24, 25, 41, 47, 48, 50, 51, 53, 54, 58, 67, and 70 are missing. In Chapter Two, notes 13, 14, 17, 25-28, 31, 46, 57-58. 63-65, and 68-70 are missing. And so on, throughout the book. When I scroll through the notes pages (at the very end of the book), many of the missing notes turn up, but out of sequence. Obviously, this is a very inefficient way to check references, etc., and some notes do not appear at all.
I hope Amazon and/or the publisher will remedy the situation.
