Review

"May this knowledge of Pope Francis' past and background enlighten every reader ... [and] provide a context for the new surprises he seems capable of offering to the Church and to the modern world as a whole." ----Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J., From the Foreword

"Andrea Tornielli is one of the best, if not the best, Vatican reporter out there. Period. He is the best-sourced, most accurate and one of the most knowledgeable reporters among the unique band of "Vaticanisti" who travel with the pope, digest theological treateses as bedtime reading and count cardinals and monsignors as friends. He has been fascinated by the church since he was 14, and it shows. Yes, he has a degree in classic Greek. But more importantly, he knows the Vatican and the people who inhabit it, and uses that knowledge to inform the world about what goes on in the frescoed halls of the Apostolic Palace. If anyone needed evidence, take his reporting of the conclave that elected Pope Francis the 265th Successor of Peter: His reports about the behind-the-scenes negotiations before the conclave were cited by cardinals as the reason for imposing a media blackout on the process. It didn't work. Tornielli kept on reporting, providing a modicum of transparency on the most secretive of processes." --Nicole Winfield, Associated Press

"As I moved through this biography, I began to appreciate the depth and complexity of Pope Francis-a soul imbued with learning, compassion, intelligence, and wisdom, originating out of a profound love for Christ and a desire to serve him in every way possible-a true son of St. Ignatius who provided the world with a similar example, devotion and love." --Fr. Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., President, Magis Institute, Author, Ten Universal Principles: A Brief Philosophy of the Life Issues

I believe it to be that good.

I have NEVER opened a book and read it to the end. It was so full of LOVE and Happy moments. It brought tears to my eyes as it seemed to remind me of my growing up. We were so poor. My mother and five little girls, homeless. Padre Jorge knows what it is like to be poor. I know the Holy Spirit surely gave the world this Holy Pope it so desperately needs.
On good Fridays when we finally had a house to live in, my mother would open the door to a room and tell me to get on my knees and pray for three hours. A ritual I have kept to this day, except I go to church. I wish Pope Francis could teach me to pray as he does every morning. Thank you, Josie M.

This book, I must admit, was quite a disappointment. When I learned of its imminent publication I imagined that it would include a wealth of previously unknown material, filling in many gaps which the media stories had left out, and thereby giving us a fuller picture of our new Pope. Instead, the majority of the pages are filled with material that can easily be retrieved through the internet, and although there are some new things I learned about the Pope, it fell far short of my expectations.

For example, what was Pope Francis' childhood like, what subjects did he enjoy? What was his religious or intellectual development like? What were some books that influenced him? What did he study or want to study in Germany for his doctorate? Tornielli basically weaves a tapestry of folklore that we have already heard countless times, such as Francis' humble abode in Buenos Aires, his taking of public transportation, he shedding the gold pectoral cross for his own plain one. Even worse, there are many chapters that having nothing to do with him at all, but rather with the history of the Conclave.

I was hoping for a more detailed look at the man's life; something like the autobiographical book Milestones written by Cardinal Ratzinger. That being said, for someone who had not been closely following the media coverage of the Conclave or the New Pope, this book will at least give that reader a basic outline of his life and personality. I hope that a much more thorough biography will be forthcoming in the future.

The anecdotes are engaging inspiring and come with ideas for the soul from the life and ministry of a high church official Pope Francis seeking to serve with compassion and genuine love for others. This is a book difficult to put down.

Like another reviewer, I read this book in one sitting. It was captivating and gave the reader a good look at the heart and mind of the New Pope Francis. I am so happy that we have a down to earth, caring for the poor, Humble pope to lead the free world. He is a breath of fresh air in a world that is fast becoming evil. I was so impressed with the quotes in the book of the things he said before he was pope and after he was pope.

I go to a Salvation Army church but of late have become fascinated with the Catholic church. I am sure glad we have this man in charge. For the price of a movie and a drink you can really enjoy a good book here!

Love always

I could not get past the first few chapters of this book. Why? The author engaged in the usual speculative predictions based on early superficial gestures by the new pope which were so prevalent in the early weeks after the conclave. Examples? He notes that the new pope did not want the usual attire of a new pope, greeted the people differently upon election, paid his own bill, took the bus, refused the papal car, etc. The immediate implication was that this was a pope in touch with the people, backhandedly implying the the previous Pope Benedict XVI, like the Catholic Church entire, was not. After two tries at this book, I could not help but feel insulted and discarded the book. Worse, the book is not fair to the faithful or the Holy Father for these reasons. Money wasted. For quality insightful and informative books on the new Holy Father, I recommend On Heaven and Earth: Pope Francis on Faith, Family, and the Church in the Twenty-First Century and Pope Francis: Conversations with Jorge Bergoglio: His Life in His Own Words which were written before the conclave and thus don't engage in speculation.

This is no book, it is just the size of a long newspaper article. Very disappointing. For the most part he just quotes another article.

Mostly informative and a review of the first days with a background insight to the person of Pope Francis. I enjoyed getting more information on the early days of Pope Francis' life.

Blurbs annouce a quality which is not there. Reworks the obvious. There are plenty of books on the internet on papa Bergoglio doing the same with less emphasis.
