Book Description

August 30, 2006
The San Damiano crucifix is a stage where a story is being told. There are different sets and players on the stage and we are the audience viewing it; and it too has an audience upon it that is both viewing the crucifixion and playing a part in it.... Francis walked onto that stage a person who had within him the violence of war, unrest and severe doubts. And on this stage he became a person of peace. His prayer before the crucifix is also our prayer, What will be ours to be and do?
from the Introduction

Francis and the San Damiano Cross: Meditations on Spiritual Transformation is an invaluable prayer resource that uses the cross of San Damiano the cross that spoke to Francis of Assisi as inspiration for personal reflection. Susan Saint Sing, a former resident of Assisi and follower of Francis, takes the reader on a journey to the place where Francis prayed before the San Damiano Cross. Not only does she recall her own personal journey to Assisi, she recounts the spiritual and physical transformation of Francis in his quest to rebuild the church a quest that began in the small, broken-down church of San Damiano but was the catalyst for a much broader reconstruction.

These meditations not only detail and explain the images on the cross itself, but they explain the powerful message of the cross transformation: It speaks to us still, beckoning us to repair our lives, our relationships, our failings in honor of Him who gave his life there on the cross in order for us to become more in the fullness of his presence, to be instruments of peace. Christ s death and resurrection, celebrated on this gilded cross is a call to each of us, like it was to Francis, to become great through Him. We are called to live like Francis, to be like him and to be transformed.

Review

…a powerful book about the San Damiano cross as a positive force for peace and transformation. A spiritual force inhabits Saint Sing's words so that the reader experiences something of what Saints Francis and Clare experienced as they prayed before this famous Franciscan icon. --Murray Bodo, O.F.M., author, Landscape of Prayer and Francis: The Journey and the Dream

4.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Symbolism, January 25, 2007
This review is from: Francis And the San Damiano Cross: Meditations on Spiritual Transformation (Paperback)
Subtitled "Meditations on Spiritual Transformation," this work is organized around the San Damiano Cross and its effect on St. Francis of Assisi. For those who don't know the story, Francis came upon the cross in a ramshackle church and as he prayed, heard the voice of Christ telling him "Go and repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin."

Each short chapter consists of a description of one of the elements of the San Damiano crucifix, Francis' response, and "our" response. I found all of these thought provoking, but because I was unfamiliar with this cross and its myriad symbols, I felt the need to download an enlarged color picture from the Internet to keep nearby as I read. I did not need graphics, however, to understand the relationships Saint Sing uncovers among the cross, Francis' life, and ours. She says, for example, that we are all called to make repairs, perhaps in our work, our environment, or our relationships with others or with God. And in the story of St. Francis' embracing lepers, she sees our call to work "daily and steadfastly to bring the lepers of our lives to our family table, especially the lepers within our own family already sitting in our midst."

4.0 out of 5 stars The San Damiano Cross - what one sees in it., March 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Francis And the San Damiano Cross: Meditations on Spiritual Transformation (Paperback)
The San Damiano Cross is an artistic piece, and by looking at it you would not begin to think much about it. But once you begin to understand the symbolism of the images on the cross, or the meditations on various parts of it; they are found to be numerous. Saint Francis often reflected on this cross, and one day God spoke to his heart. Francis and the San Damiano Dross: Meditations on Spiritual Transformation,is a book that cannot cover all the meanings found in the images, but it opens the door to one's reflections on it, and the invitation Christ gives with his eyes opened, and arms outstretched, inviting you to discover Him in them. A group that meditates heavily on this cross is the Confraternity of Penitents, a lay Franciscan Association. I came up with 42 pages of meditations on the various parts of the cross, from the newsletters, and consolidated them. I wish I found this book first!
The books I purchased from Amazon, have been priced fairly, and shipped promptly. Their service and prices, has brought me back time and time again. Pax et Bonum - Peace and Goodness.
