Timeless Symbolism,
By
This review is from: Francis And the San Damiano Cross: Meditations on Spiritual Transformation (Paperback)
Subtitled "Meditations on Spiritual Transformation," this work is organized around the San Damiano Cross and its effect on St. Francis of Assisi. For those who don't know the story, Francis came upon the cross in a ramshackle church and as he prayed, heard the voice of Christ telling him "Go and repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin."
Each short chapter consists of a description of one of the elements of the San Damiano crucifix, Francis' response, and "our" response. I found all of these thought provoking, but because I was unfamiliar with this cross and its myriad symbols, I felt the need to download an enlarged color picture from the Internet to keep nearby as I read. I did not need graphics, however, to understand the relationships Saint Sing uncovers among the cross, Francis' life, and ours. She says, for example, that we are all called to make repairs, perhaps in our work, our environment, or our relationships with others or with God. And in the story of St. Francis' embracing lepers, she sees our call to work "daily and steadfastly to bring the lepers of our lives to our family table, especially the lepers within our own family already sitting in our midst."

The San Damiano Cross - what one sees in it.,

This review is from: Francis And the San Damiano Cross: Meditations on Spiritual Transformation (Paperback)
The San Damiano Cross is an artistic piece, and by looking at it you would not begin to think much about it. But once you begin to understand the symbolism of the images on the cross, or the meditations on various parts of it; they are found to be numerous. Saint Francis often reflected on this cross, and one day God spoke to his heart. Francis and the San Damiano Dross: Meditations on Spiritual Transformation,is a book that cannot cover all the meanings found in the images, but it opens the door to one's reflections on it, and the invitation Christ gives with his eyes opened, and arms outstretched, inviting you to discover Him in them. A group that meditates heavily on this cross is the Confraternity of Penitents, a lay Franciscan Association. I came up with 42 pages of meditations on the various parts of the cross, from the newsletters, and consolidated them. I wish I found this book first!
The books I purchased from Amazon, have been priced fairly, and shipped promptly. Their service and prices, has brought me back time and time again. Pax et Bonum - Peace and Goodness. |
