Amazon.com Review
The X4 espresso machine from Francis Francis! is as curvy, sleek, and gorgeous as the hull of a ship. Fortunately, its also designed to fit on your countertop and take the guesswork out of home espresso-brewing. Combining the beauty of stainless steel with the precision of digital programming, the X4 brews espresso, steams milk, churns out hot water, and responds to your custom commands. It also takes care of itself, automatically refilling the boiler, shutting off if empty, and updating the digital display.
Like the other X-line espresso machines designed by Luca Trazzi, the X4 features a pump-driven brew system with 8-9 bars of dynamic pressure. The brewing handles are chrome-plated brass for ideal temperature, and the machine uses either Easy Serving Espresso pods or loose grounds. Two handles are included, one for each method, as well as three interchangeable baskets for different size shots. The X4s computerized processes and feedback systems let you customize the temperature of your shots, as well as schedule the machine to turn on and off. The blue digital display keeps you informed throughout the brewing time and switches to a clock when not in use.
Thanks to its stylish curves, the X4 requires a more spacious countertop than some of its sister models. It measures 12 by 13 by 12 inches and weighs 25 pounds. Demitasses can be stored on top for warming, and the 32-ounce water tank, mounted at the back, tips out for easy filling. Made in Italy, the X4 is warranted for one year after purchase. --Emily Bedard
From the Manufacturer
The X4 had already come out of the pencil of industrial designer Luca Trazzi as early as 1996, but the realization of the idea took another five years. From the beginning, all of the specialists we asked to realize the body of the X4, which was to be cast and soldered in polished stainless steel, explained to us that a form of the like was simply impossible to make. After a long search, we succeeded in finding the person who was able to do it. The X4 looks like a tank on a bicycle; with its blue digital display it recalls a certain famous and friendly extra-terrestrial. The X4 is completely computerized and programmable: it automatically refills its boiler tanks, and if the water tank is empty, it gives a signal and turns itself off. After it begins making coffee, it stops by itself based on a pre-determined time, which is very easy to program. The X4 allows you to change the coffee-brewing temperature according to the your preference, and it turns on and off by itself at desired times, so as not to consume energy when not in use. The X4 produces a continuous supply of vapor, allowing for the heating of more milk than traditional machines. When in the stand-by position, the X4 displays the time by a retro-activated illumination device. Like the other espresso machines in the X series, the X4 has the Easy Serving Espresso (ESE) system.
