About the Author

Historian and photographer Richard Hansen has been doing 1906 photographic shows since 1970. He cofounded the website sfmuseum.org, which covers San Francisco history with a focus on the earthquake and fire of 1906, with David Fowler in 1990. The website is also home to the great register covering those who perished in 1906, compiled by Gladys Hansen, city archivist emerita of San Francisco.

Format: Paperback
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake is one of the most famous natural disasters in American history. Noted San Francisco historians Richard and Gladys Hansen combine talents to produce this fascinating photo-history of that momentous event. Part of Arcadia Publishing's IMAGES OF AMERICA series, 1906 SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE was published in 2013.

The Hansen book runs to 128 pages, some 215 photographs, illustrations and maps being featured. Ten pages are given over to pre-earthquake pix of San Francisco. Earthquake images take up the next 20 pages. The bulk of the book is devoted to post-earthquake images. Included in the book are various shots of City buildings damaged or destroyed by the quake and subsequent fire, vistas of San Francisco on fire, rubble-filled streets, lines of people waiting for food and water, community kitchens, impromptu shelters and hospitals, military and police enforcing order and, somewhat unusually in my experience, pix of dead bodies.

The varied images, many of them new to me, are complimented by various chapters on the Fire, its Aftermath, Cooking in the Streets, City Rebuilding, etc. Richard Hansen cofounded the well-regarded sfmuseum.org website. Gladys Hansen is city archivist emerita of San Francisco so both 'know their San Francisco stuff.'

In summary, 1906 SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE has a lot going for it: a wide variety of pix, authoritative text and inexpensive price ($21.99). It's an excellent photo-primer to that catastrophic event. Recommended.

This is wonderful pictorial history. The photo accounts of ordinary citizens having to cope with escaping the fires, finding shelter, obtaining food and a means for cooking it, having to deal with problems of sanitation, health and safety , along with burying the dead, put a human face on the disaster. Well worth your time and money.
