This is a fun, collectible book for anyone who grew up or lived in San Francisco's Sunset District. Nice pictures and a nice account of life in the city in previous years....

A must for people who grew up in the Sunset,
This review is from: San Francisco's Sunset District (Images of America) (Paperback)
This is a very enjoyable book, and a must for anyone who grew up in the Sunset District. Lots of interesting pictures, and an enjoyable stroll down memory lane. One minor complaint: the author says the Parkside portion of the Sunset Dist starts at Noriega; I believe it starts at Quintera or Rivera.

I grew up in the Sunset. I even knew a few of the people named in some of the pictures. It brought back to mind many fond and precious memories.

Lorri Ungaretti is a lifelong resident of the Sunset and probably knows more about it than anyone else on the planet. She also leads walking tours of it. She has put together a very coherent history of a fascinating area that most San Franciscans rarely visit and tourists have never heard of. She has assembled excellent photos--most are from private collections--that give a good sense of the Sunset through the various decades of its existence. And her commentary with the photos helps the reader understand the area and its history. My only criticism--a small one--is that she does not have enough interior shots of typical houses and apartments. Because the Sunset is a residential district--the largest in San Francisco--interior shots would help the reader understand better how people lived. But, as my title says, this is the best book on the Sunset District in existence.

If you grew up in the Sunset (or Parkside), here is another little treasure for you to read and enjoy. See my review for Ocean Beach. Carpetbaggers need not try to understand.
