As you will be able to see from the pictures, the plates, salad plates and bowls are slightly "stretched" square shapes. The sides of the plates slope rather steeply to a circle shape in the middle. The bowls are shallow but make up for that with their width. The bowls will hold about one and ½ cups of liquids and still have a comfortable safety margin to prevent spills. Since the bowls are shallow, spills are more likely to occur.
These dishes are what I would describe as mid-weight. They are certainly not as heavy as some earthenware but they are also not extremely lightweight. The edges are smooth and well rounded. It appears that the finish is very good. I will need to use them for an extended period of time to learn if the dishwasher and/or knives will mar the surface.
The dishes are extremely well packed. There were no scratches or abrasions on any of the dishes. They were so well packed it took some effort to get the dishes out of the packing.
If you are looking for a upscale, modern, chic set of casual dishes I think these should certainly be considered.
We are very pleased with the look and feel of the dishes and plan to use them to replace a set that was a few years old and missing a couple of pieces.
Keep in mind they are only heavy weight for porcelain, if you are used to earthenware they are quite thin and lightweight. They also will get very hot with say a hot soup or the like. On the other hand they handle heat differences like a champ, and thus are probably fairly well fired. Finish is good, which is fortunate as any flaws would be terribly visible.
They ship well packed within their box, and don't suffer from dust problems like you will see on some (even fairly expensive) dinnerware sets.
Honestly even at fairly formal occasions these hold up fine, but it is hard to overstate just how much attention they draw to your food. Unappetizing food will look especially unappetizing, and watching a few youtube videos of plating is probably mandatory if you are going to try to entertain with this set.
When I placed them on the counter it occurred to me just how plain they looked. They are pretty but have a very sterile look to them. I went to stack them and that is when I discovered that they were not squared with round corners but were actually slightly rectangular - meaning that they can only be stacked evenly in one direction. So before using them I put them all in the dishwasher to scrub off any shipping residue. They washed fine but two of the bowls apparently clacked together in the dishwasher and one chipped. So before even using them once, I already have a chipped bowl.
I have since used them in the microwave, and although they are "microwave safe" they do conduct heat very well - meaning the bowl required me to use a towel to get it out of the microwave to carry my soup over to the table. I also found that these bowls with their wide bottom and low lip are very difficult to carry without sloshing liquids out of them.
On the whole these seem to be fairly nice, very plain, easily chipped dishes. They style isn't my favorite, but I could see these being something that would suit other people very well.
When I stacked the set in my cupboard, it looked like they were uneven so I did a little test to see if I was imagining something. I placed one of the bowls upside down on a piece of paper and traced around the edge. When I turn the bowl to any position but the original, it is slightly off from the traced line. So indeed, they are slightly asymmetrical! Now to me, this adds to their uniqueness but might be an issue if symmetry is important to you.
My set was well packed and arrived completely undamaged. One of my plates does have a blemish in the glaze though. You can see from the picture I've posted, it is a good-sized black speck near the edge of one plate. Its really a shame because this is a glaring blemish on an otherwise wonderful set.
