Great book,

This review is from: A Frangible Quest (Paperback)
"A Frangible Quest" was an enjoyable read and a trip back in time. It's a mystery if liked it more because I knew most of the people or for his ability to hold the reader. By far my favorite was his built in two hours late. When writing about ourselves we tend to diminish or embellish; I can state with confidence; Rex did not overstate himself. Our first meeting was in the early "80's" at the "4 Star Gym" in El Segundo. He was a scrawny kid and I was the gym tough/strong guy, five years his senior. I'm not sure what he did to piss-me-off but, shortly after he arrived, I was moving toward him yelling at the top of my voice. I can still remember the scared look on his face and the terror in the ice blue eyes when we came face to face. We knew who was going to win this exchange and he didn't like it. I was ready to teach this kid who was on the top of the food chain until I saw something unexpected. He didn't move. His lips quivered, eyes twitched and hands slightly shook but he stood his ground. Normally, those involuntary movements would send a guy running once he realized the situation but Rex, no way. I kept looking at this kid and was impressed. I was bouncing at crappy bar by the age of sixteen and had more than my share of fights but, for the first time, I turned and walked away. My years dealing with lowlifes allowed me to read faces and there was no "quit" in him. He knew I could pound him into a grease spot but WE knew' that exactly what I would have to do. What a cool kid. With an earned respect, shortly we became buddies. Several years later, he got me a job with UPS when I left the Army. I had some rough years but he always gave me respect even when I didn't deserve it. To this day, he's one of only two guys that would fight for me. He's a solid man and I'm proud to have known him many years ago.

A terrific read,

If there was ever a definition of a "can't put it down" book, this novel is it. Absolutely fascinating from the first page on. The author, an active duty sergeant with a Los Angeles area police department, has written a semi-autobiographical tale about life on the streets for a modern policeman, a story which rings with authenticity. I hope there are more tales to come from this new author.

I could not stop reading A Frangible Quest until I hit the back cover. This is a wonderful insight into the life of a young man and his mentor and the lives of our law enforcement officers. I can't wait to read Rex Fowler's next work.

A Frangible Quest,
This review is from: A Frangible Quest (Paperback)
Good book. Very hard to put down. I read it in two sittings.I always thought that I would have made a pretty good cop, but after reading the description of the trials and tribulations, plus the cost to your body and mind, I am not sure I would have been up to it. I liked the way he worked the tragedy of his friend's auto accident into the story line. It really came home to roost at the end. Incredible that he got launched out of that Healy that way. One point I wonder about is "Why didn't OCS check his vision before he started the course?" Anyway, well done. Great book.

A virile, excellently and tightly written story: if you like cop books, you'll like it. If you like real men, ladies, you'll appreciate this one.

This book was a great read. It shared insights into the mindset of someone who is a police officer now, written about when he was not a police officer, and the decision making process to become one.A great mentor can change lives, and Rex is living proof of that. He's a great police officer, and he's also written an honest and insightful book on what it takes to be a mentor. Mike Lunsford was a hell of a cop, and Rex Fowler did him proud.

State of Awareness,

This review is from: A Frangible Quest (Paperback)
Could not put it down until it was finished, leaving me wanting more. The State of Awareness that a police officers lives in twenty-four hours a day is eye opening. Having to make life and death decisions, based small changes in surroundings, leaves me with a greater appreciation for the job we ask them to do. Mr. Fowler makes me feel the tension and gets me to join him in the analysis of a potential dangerous that he faces. The exploration of a mentor in your life adds a sensitive depth to the story that still has me thinking. |
