This guy is tremendous - he's from southern California, sings and plays fiddle, banjo, and guitar, in "old-timey" style. All the songs on this record are traditional, apparently gleaned from his collection of 78 rpm records from the early part of the 20th century. The only title I recognize is "John Hardy", which was recorded in 1928 by the Carter Family and later in the '60's by Bob Dylan. Mr. Fairfield also has another release consisting of a selection of original 78's from his collection - I'm looking forward to hearing that one as well (both these records are on the Tompkins Square label, previously unknown to me - a look at their website reveals a lot of intriguing-looking releases by additional artists). The reason I all-of-a-sudden have glommed onto Frank Fairfield is that I saw/heard him perform last weekend at the long-running University of Chicago Folk Festival (the previously mentioned Mr. Dylan played at the second one, in 1962), and he brought the house down with his spirited playing and singing, and his look - he's like a ghost from a distant past. Seek him out!

This guy is amazing. I found him on Youtube by accident and now I can't stop listening to him. He's carrying the torch for Americana style folk music. I'm gonna order this on cd and "Out on the Open West" on cd and vinyl as soon as I get paid. If you like the Delta blues and early folk/country music like Roscoe Holcomb and Buell Kazee, you'll love him.

I discovered him by accident in youtube. i was looking for the song Rye Whiskey and found his radio recording. After that I looked for more of his songs and I must say he's very reminiscent of Jimmie Rodgers(the Father of Country Music)
Of course its highly unlikely we'll ever hear this man on the radio, which is a great shame in my opinion.
