5.0 out of 5 stars A Book You Have Been Waiting For, October 22, 2004
By
Myron Marty (Monticello, IL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Frank Lloyd Wright Interactive Portfolio (Misc. Supplies)
Readers are likely to discover that this is a book they have been waiting for. Margo Stipe leads readers through various stages of Frank Lloyd Wright's life with remarkably lucid and concise writing. While countless books on Wright include stunning pictures like the ones appearing here, this book's distinctive design sets it apart. Throughout one finds illustrative documents bound into the pages, or in envelope-like enclosures, or in page-size translucent sleeves, or on foldout pages. Handling them gives one a sense of having been present at their creation. Listening to the 60-minute compact disk of excerpts from Wright's speeches and interviews, pocketed inside the cover, has the same effect. This "interactive portfolio" is certain to claim a place in the library of persons wishing to learn more about Frank Lloyd Wright. Offered at a bargain price, it will bring its readers immeasurable pleasures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Look Inside his Life, January 23, 2005
This review is from: Frank Lloyd Wright Interactive Portfolio (Misc. Supplies)
This book is almost a scrapbook that you might have collected if you had gone through life at Frank Lloyd Wright's side. It's got a book in it, but it's not very big. There an Audio CD of him speaking at various interviews, lectures and other talks. There are removable facsimilies of original documents, both photographs and never before published architectural sketches. There are some hand written notes written by him, including a hand drawn wedding invitation. In short, this is a collection of things that Frank Lloyd Wright saved. It appears that he liked to save things, and remarkably much of it remains in the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in Scottsdale, Arizona. It's fascinating to look into the life of a genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introduction to FLW visions and growth, April 4, 2007
This review is from: Frank Lloyd Wright Interactive Portfolio (Misc. Supplies)
My first real adventure into FLW's buildings and his visions. I was amazed at the vast size of his buildings and use of nature and the surroundings. Hearing him on the DVD brought additional insights. Review his drawings and letters included. A world of new experience for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful compilation!, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Frank Lloyd Wright Interactive Portfolio (Misc. Supplies)
I saw this book and its inserts while browsing in the gift shop at Taliesin West. I couldn't buy it at that time because I didn't have any room to spare in my luggage for our flight home. I found it for a good price on Amazon, though, and ordered it as soon as I returned home. It's a beautiful book, with interesting text. The inserts, though, are what sold me on this book. The reproductions of correspondence, sketches and plans are so well done that some of them look original and authentic. It's a great addition to my library of books relating to Frank Lloyd Wright.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, June 15, 2008
This review is from: Frank Lloyd Wright Interactive Portfolio (Misc. Supplies)
As an Architect student, I love this book. I show all my friends how a real great mind works. Wright is my favorite architect, so when I was this it was a given ofr me to buy it. I highly suggest checking your local book store first, because I bought this EXACT one for 13 dollars.

I purchased this for my father for Christmas. It turns out he had rented it from the library but it didn't have all of the extras, i.e. cd and blueprint drawings. He absolutely loved it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like this, correspondence, drawings, fold out pages, January 5, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Frank Lloyd Wright Interactive Portfolio (Misc. Supplies)
This is clearly a labor of love. The solid box the book fits into is very cool. Keeps the book with about 9 clear sleeves with insert papers from gettin' smushed. A few nice big photos. Plenty a text. Other good smaller photos. And a cd of Wright speaking. It's nice to finally have some drawings to hold and unfold. I'm not sure all 18 or so of them are what I would have chosen. One in particular is pretty basic. But the mile high tower is 3 folded tall. And there's maybe 6 letters he sent out, modern letter writers might not recognize them with their notations and corrections because since computers we don't need to make such written corrections but in his day that's all they had. I'd easily have taken more and bigger drawings than any of the letters. As it is most of the drawings are 3 or 4 foldouts, very nice. Definitely worth the lower used price available on amazon.com. I think you do have to be a fan though to appreciate it. I'd love to see more books made this way, expanding the notion of what a book is or can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest, most awesome book I ever purchased!, October 29, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Frank Lloyd Wright Interactive Portfolio (Misc. Supplies)
This book is absolutely amazing! I have never owned another book matching the caliber of this masterpiece. I don't think you even have to be a Frank Lloyd lover to appreciate this book. It is for everyone who can appreciate art, architecture, and learning through various ways about the genius of Wright. The book box cover, the carefully laid out plans and packets in the book illustrating the drafting and the various buildings this man created is fun and exciting. The CD is complementary in that it captures the essence of this man whose ego was the size of his largest creations----albeit he has every right to think himself the best architect who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. If he were still with us, he would include the 21st century as a categorical imperative that he is/was the greatest architect of all time. Oh what a character he was, and oh what an absolute mind he beheld---and as genius of his craft he had all the right to be self righteous, egotistical and unapologetic. This is a downright amazing book. I am buying two, one to keep in perfect condition and the other to immerse myself in and learn and teach and adore. I will probably buy even more of this particular book as gifts--whether the person has no idea who FLW is or if they are professional architects themselves, all will be educated and enamored by it and it's accompaning accessories.
