Book Description

August 12, 2005
In captivating color photography and well-researched commentary, Tom Heinz captures the essence of Frank Lloyd Wright's genius and his fascination with the interplay of light and shadow in an exquisite representation of Frank Lloyd Wright's lighting treatments.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Stained Glass & Lightscreens features not only Wright's iridescent stained glass but a sweeping range of his "lightscreens," Wright's term for his designs that capture the essence of both light and shadow. These screens were not intended to obscure the window view but to modify and focus it through framing.
Wright's abstraction of patterns and geometry from nature--plants and flowers--resulted in imaginative stained-glass designs. While he is best known for his stained glass set in metal frames, he also created screens in cut wood, concrete, and terra-cotta.
Thomas A. Heinz, AIA, has been involved with the restoration of more than forty Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and is the author of twenty books on Wright. He is also coauthor with Randell L. Makinson and principal photographer for Greene and Greene: The Blacker House and Greene and Greene Creating a Style. He lives in Mettawa, Illinois.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The book presents artsy windows designed by the celebrated architect...Wright's early career is traced, followed by details about his achievements over a seven-decade career. (Chicago Sun-Times ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Inside Flap

This exquisite look at Frank Lloyd Wright's windows, along with a representation of his limited production of light fixtures, is the first comprehensive study on the subject. Thomas A. Heinz features not only Wright's iridescent stained glass but a sweeping range of his lightscreens, Wright's term for his designs that capture the essence of both light and shadow. The screens were not intended to obscure the view out the window but to modify and focus it through framing. It was Wright's abstraction of patterns and geometry from nature--plants and flowers--that resulted in the most imaginative stained-glass designs that had ever been seen up to his time. But while he is best known for his stained glass set in metal frames, he also created screens in cut wood, concrete, and even terra-cotta. In fact, Wright did not use the glass-and-metal system after 1924, though he continued to design lightscreens. In captivating color photography and well-researched commentary, Mr. Heinz captures the essence of Frank Lloyd Wright's genius, his fascination with the interplay of light and shadow--throughout the day and with the changing seasons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent pictures of many FLLW glass designs, November 6, 2000
By A Customer
This book has a fairly decent amount of photos of FLLW's glass designs, and the quality of the photos is decent also. I haven't read much of the book since I'm mainly interested in the photographs of his windows. There's not a lot of quality books out there for his stained glass (unless you want to spend $... on the Glass Art book), so this is a worthwhile introductory purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Book - But NOT a pattern book, June 22, 2006

I actually DID read this lovely book accentuated by wonderful pictures....just be aware that it is NOT a book of stained glass patterns although the pictures will surely provide ample ideas for you to adapt. It'll be difficult NOT to get excited about doing some 'lightscreen' projects around your home or office where you DO want want to see outside, unobstructed light and scenery with either full panels or partial panels. Am I glad I bought this book?...You bet!

This review is from: Frank Lloyd Wright's Stained Glass: Stained Glass & Lightscreens (Paperback)
The stained glass information was helpful to me in my own stained glass business- well written and historically accurate, and the book captured the essence of who Frank Lloyd Wright was. The only criticism is that some of the photos weren't better- better lighting and professionally taken, which I realize could be hard to do in what are now historical buildings. The author is definitely qualified in all aspects (building these windows, and in historical study) to write this book.
