Editorial Reviews

Frank Munn was born to a working class family in 1894. Growing up in New York, young Frank was blessed with a fine voice and sang at live concerts and on local radio. By the early 1920's he also began making phonograph records to assist his income as a laborer. In 1928 Munn was offered a lucrative spot on 'The Palmolive Hour' a network radio show sponsored by the popular soap-maker - making radio his exclusive career. He soon became the star of two other network shows; 'The American Album of Familiar Music' and 'Waltz Time' both of which entertained the public throughout the Great Depression and World War II, making him one of the favorite tenors on radio until his retirement in 1945. His specialty was ballads and his 'golden voice' reassured the radio audience during times of crisis with hits like I'll be Seeing You, Together, You Belong to My Heart and Dream.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Release Should Have At Least One Review April 29, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The sands of time have all but obscured the musical legacy of Frank Munn. Once known as the king of radio crooners, he enjoyed massive popularity on several radio variety shows between 1928 through 1945. He also experienced success as a recording artist for the Brunswick label. Frank's records consistently charted on the national best seller lists.

This 2013 Take Two release, compiles twenty tracks with a total playing time of sixty minutes. The material is the gold standard of the American songbook. Legendary composers such as Cole Porter, Rogers & Hammerstein, Mercer & VanHeusen, Gordon & Warren and Cahn & Styne are well represented.

The selections originate not from studio recordings but rather from mid 1940s radio broadcasts. The audio quality, for sixty-eight year old material, is exceptional. This is primarily due to the quality craftsmanship Doug Schwartz has applied to the sound restoration and digital mastering.

Frank Munn's talent resided with his warm, crystal clear tenor voice and his penchant to deliver a song with flawless diction. The artist possessed impeccable phrasing and delivered each song straight from his heart. He also had the good fortune to be accompanied by Abe Lyman and his orchestra.

Abe's orchestra was the" toast of the town" in Los Angeles. He was a featured performer for extended stays at The Cocoanut Groove and the Sunset Club. He also enjoyed international fame with critically acclaimed performances at London's Palladium and the legendary Kit Kat Club. His artistic reputation was further assured by favorable reviews from his Paris performances at the Moulin Rouge.

Frank Munn's legacy may have survived the decades if it wasn't for his reluctance to perform in public.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Re-issue of a Great Radio Tenor January 17, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Take 2Records has issued a long over due issue of rare radio transcriptions of one of radio's most servicable tenors. With a beautiful light, lyric tenor voice, Munn sang under his own name as well as a nom-de-plume, Paul Oliver, on radio as well as a series of fine discs for the Victor Talking Machine Company - (RCA-Victor). The radio transcriptions are clean and the program notes add so much. The company specializes in really excellent re-issues of great popular artists of yesteryear. Munn rarely performed outside of the radio studio; yet, throughout the 1920's, 30's and into the early part of the 1940's, Munn appeared on numerous radio programs. It is hoped that Take2 Records will issue a series of his Brunswick titles as well as duets with Virginia Rea, soprano, RCA "Paul Oliver" titles, his electric Edison discs and sole Columbia disc. All are worth hearing and owning via cd's. A 10 out of 10 rating. This is a must for any record collector, aficiando, or music lover who enjoys artists of the past

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!! October 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It took me back to when I was a small child cuddled up on my Dad's knee. I recognized the Announcer right away too. That was in the 1940's and I would have been 4 years old. Thank you.
