Editorial Reviews

Odd Future member Frank Ocean may at first sound like some crazy hybrid of Trey Songz and Kid Cudi, but those comparisons will stop once you get through the first few tracks of nostalgia, ultra. Here's the thing: this is a really good R&B album...there I said it. Frank Ocean is a singer who croons about his feelings, writes love songs, and in the process makes some quality music. The excellent songwriting and psychedelic production, combined with Ocean's ear for beats and powerful voice make for a cohesive, melodically sophisticated concept album mixtape.

How did I miss this? I'd heard Novacane on the radio but dismissed it as standard disposable RnB fare. Ocean's recent revelation and the current hype surrounding him made me look a little deeper, and I'm glad I did. This guy has skills. This isn't cookie-cutter RnB. It's a nice collection of songs, and there's nothing standard about it. The beats and melodies push the bounds of RnB while maintaining its unmistakable spirit. I've only given the album a few spins, but its appeal is immediate. This is good music, pure and simple. These are songs you want to listen to repeatedly not just because the music is good, but because you want to get all the details of the stories he's telling and the feelings he's sharing. It's not crass or vulgar, even when it's briefly profane, like most of what we hear on the radio. It's moody and dreamy and groovy.

While Ocean clearly has a hip hop sensibility, there's a wide range of musical influences apparent in this collection. American Wedding uses the melody from the Eagles' Hotel California with new lyrics. (Apparently, the controversy about that prohibits the song's inclusion on the Amazon version of the album, but it's out there...and worth tracking down). Strawberry Swing is a Coldplay cover. These songs are thoughtful, lyrical, and well crafted. He's not an exceptional singer, but he's good; you can feel what he's singing. Several songs are about love, of course, and even though love has been done to death, the sentiments sound fresh. As a listening experience, you can play Nostalgia Ultra straight through. It has a brash, laid back, experimental feel, a brightly funky groove that's perfectly suited to lying around on Saturdays and enjoying your favorite indulgences. Frank Ocean is now one of mine.

Amazing and probably the best cd I could have ever bought. Only gripe I have is the songs that got removed like American Wedding and a couple of others but still great. I just wish The Eagles would come up off their crap and let the song get played cause its awesome and he performs it well. Plus they may would get some other stuff sampled if they would only accept the notoreity instead of griping like some old nursing home destined prudes.

Hip-hop isn't really my home, but this album is the best thing I've heard this year. Smooth vibe, thug free

Great album, but never officially released on CD by Def Jam or anyone. If you want to pay $14.99 for someone else's laser-printed artwork and CD-R, that's your business I guess. Or just download the whole thing for free (legally) from Frank's site:

Fantastic album. And yes, White Wedding as Frank Ocean does it, is superb. Funny how this album barely registers here. Must be getting squashed by legal red tape. A shame.

Beautiful, well-crafted music, full of Ocean's intuitive, creative, and emotional intelligence. I hardly ever feel this way about any contemporary artist, but I respect him high up there with Joni Mitchell. Frank Ocean will definitely keep going with his fine-assed artistry through the ages, and will become a genuine & true legend, just as Mitchell has.

do not buy this!!!!!!!
Thanks very much for the link. It's a shame people are paying for something that was released for free from the artist.
