A Better Grip, A Better Walk

If handle fatigue sets in, it may turn into a case of your dog walking you instead you walking your dog. Getting a good grip is critical when dog walking. The Avant Garde retractable leash is fitted with an ergonomic handle that eases the strain from the repetitive motion of holding the leash. With two sizes (small and medium) to choose from depending on the size and weight of your dog, the handle on Avant Garde retractable leash has also been scaled in height accordingly.

I was excited about this leash because the design on the case looked so cool. Let's get into it...

a) when I received it, it had some cosmetic flaws on the surface of the graphic, potentially from the poor packaging that had it in a box too small without any protection from the coarse box (which was touching both sides of the case) rubbing up against the graphic. wouldn't be surprised if instead it was a return from someone else either. it was sold by Amazon so this whole experience, from the packaging to the cosmetic flaws, is highly irregular.

b) the leash doesn't extend properly/consistently. this is because the "rope" part of the leash is flat and rectangular, not round. if the dog moves to the left or right at enough of an angle, the leash will not extend or retract anymore, whether it is locked or not. think, if your dog is walking on the sidewalk and suddenly runs out into the street; it will be on a loose leash and you will have to get through the slack when pulling back before you can even pull the dog out of the street (or you will at the least have to bring the leash in line with the case to allow it to retract again). a little dangerous and a major flaw imo.

c) and it's a bit heavier than the extension leashes we have been using in the past (we currently have 3 from various places).

overall, I can't recommend this product in the least. cool graphic, but I immediately returned it the same day it arrived (today). hopefully this helps someone else save some time.

cheers!

I've gone through 3 leashes with my first dog and my second puppy is really small and quite the puller. I got him an easy walk harness and this and it works great! I love how comfortable the handle is and how easy the release button works. It keeps him close to me when walking and I can give him a little leeway to meet other dogs and go to the bathroom. You can't beat the super cute Paul Frank designs! I had a hard time choosing- i also got him a monkey poop bag dispenser to match.

i used to buy retractable cable from petsmart for $15 and they break like once every year (and i only have a 5lb yorkie). this is much better and i am sure it will work for a much longer life span. not to mention cute paul frank!!!

The only redeeming quality with this leash is the cool graphic casing. For me, the leash's appeal ends there.

As others have stated, this is a "ribbon" type retractable leash and not a "rope" or cord type. And while one may not receive those nasty leg burns with a ribbon retractable leash, the leash curls and twists, which makes retraction difficult and at times, annoyingly impossible.

Also, the case came apart easily on mine, revealing the inner mechanisms & the coiled leash, etc (????). One or two uses and the cool case scratched, as well.

Finally, the length of the leash is EXTREMELY short and did not provide enough freedom for my Havanese, Ernie even on the briefest city walks. Ernie hated walking while tethered to this thing.

Did not like the leash. Gave it away within a week. Coolness isn't worth the price.

It looks very nice on the outside but the quality of the lease is not very good the retractable part doesn't last very long and the two covers fall off easily

I absolutely LOVE Paul Frank, naturally I would want a Paul Frank leash for my dog. For the price of this leash, I expected alot from this product, and I think it holds up very well! I've had it for about a month now, and haven't had many problems. What I love the most about this (aside from the fact that its Paul Frank) is the way that it was made, I seriously feel like its pretty darn good quality. I would never have thought about using a retractable leash for my dog (30 pounds of muscle!) cause normal retractable leashes felt so flimsy, like they would just break on my dog! This leash is made from really good plastic material, and the grip feels good. like really good. I also love the length of this leash, I believe the small goes up to 9 or 8 feet, but the medium has a 15 feet length! WOW! i love that! especially for when I want my dogs to be able to hang out in the front yard, but be able to keep a leash on them incase they get too far away. The only questionable thing about this leash is the locking/unlocking switch. I love the switch in my opinion--makes it really easy to use, but like other reviewers have mentioned, there is not a button for the leash to retract by itself, its not really the end of the world, you just have to get used to it.
