4.0 out of 5 stars Frank has a great technique that shouts "FUN!" all the way., December 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Frank Rosolino Quintet (Audio CD)
One of those rare albums that Frank made as a leader that ACTUALLY IS AVAILABLE ON CD!. A good jazz trombone album. I gave it four stars because I like it when Frank plays at upbeat tempos, and on this album only two of the tracks are faster tempos. The only song I didn't really care for was the first song on the second side where he uses a mute. I never thought of Frank as being a mute player. A reflection of his comical side, he plays sort of jazz waltz on one tune. It makes you feel like you were on a Merry-Go-Round. Frank has a great tecnique that shouts "FUN!" all the way. Frank has always been an underated player. He never lets his fantastic technique get in the way of his phrasing and vice versa. I wish there were more CD's released of his stuff because to a trombone player, it's very uplifting and inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bebop master of the universe!, March 25, 2003

This review is from: Frank Rosolino Quintet (Audio CD)
Wonderful session from the jazz golden year of the jazz golden era. That was 1957. Frank is in splendid shape here. He blows excellent bebop solos all around this cd. This is still one of the cd's I hear the most. Frank stands among the best boppers and musicians in general of all the time. Bird, Diz and all the best cats.
1000 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars He was one of the best., February 19, 2010
I was a teenage trombonist rummaging through vinyl at a flea market when I first found this album in the early seventies. I had been listening to a broad variety of great instrumentalists for years by then but no one had ever told me about Frank Rosolino. It's understandable now that some of his notoriety may have sadly been muted by his tragic life, but at the time I knew nothing of it, only that I was hearing some of the finest improvisation I'd ever heard on my chosen instrument.

Another reviewer mentions the jazz waltz as a stand out, and I agree. This performance of Thou Swell is a gem, as indeed the whole album was a treat. For jazz lovers and aspiring players with an appreciation of this era of great jazz I commend Frank Rosolino to your short list of required listening. He had great command, imagination, warmth and fluency, and you are not likely to forget him. Many of his recordings are worthy, and certainly this album is among those.

On a side note, I believe it's possible that the image shown was not that of the original edition cover art, but in any case this image is nicer than the one I recall.
