Editorial Reviews

This first-ever U.S. release of this spectacular 1982 concert proves that even at age 66, Francis Albert Sinatra was still the undisputed Chairman Of The Board. Recorded at the Altos De Chavón Amphitheatre in La Romana, the Dominican Republic, this 90-minute epic performance features the legendary Buddy Rich on drums and a special guest appearance by guitarist Tony Mottola on a memorable rendition of Send In The Clowns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD!! October 22, 2010
Frank and the orchestra were in fantastic form that night. Sinatraphiles have been waiting for a DVD release for years and years.

The song selection was fantastic, and the Buddy Rich Orchestra couldn't have played better. Buddy even does his own number around the middle of the performance, and shows why he was the best big band drummer of them all!

Side note: Frank must have had one heck of a tailor. That tuxedo was cut perfectly. He looks really terrific for a man who was in his late 60's at the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!!!!!! October 7, 2010
Frank Sinatra opened the Amphitheater in The Casa The Campo Resort, La Romana, in Dominican Republic where this excellent concert was shot and produced. It is a pity this great venue is not used more often. On that occasion he selected a number of favorite standards and included songs where he showed his love for this country. The Orchestra was in perfect form as well. Do not miss this concert if you are a Sinatra fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Concert-average video audio/video quality November 15, 2010
This is one of Sinatra's best concerts availabe in DVD. It's been available in Brazil for a while and now finally in the US. Frank is at his best. Great song list, arrangements, fantastic orchetra, Frank is in very good shape, dancing, joking, a must buy for any Sinatra fan. No doubt about it.
But little care were taken on the audio and video quality of this and ALL other Sinatra DVDs of the new collection. Don't get me wrong, this DVD offers very decent video quality and good old stereo sound... but we are in 2010! Sinatra music is at such a high level that it is a shame that we cannot get state of the art media quality. I mean, why not restored video, even for this relatevely new material? Why not DTS audio quality or at least Dolby 5.1 audio? What about blu-ray?? When we will get the chance to watch Frank in high-rez 1080p image quality that he desearves? Take "Sinatra in Japan", for example: the old laserdisc release has better image quality than the "new" DVD release... and both on two channel stereo! We don't need more of the same material (except from Concert for the Americas, all others were available for a long time on The Frank Sinatra Collection black covers DVDs). We want either new material or at least restaured old material!
I mean, take a look at the terrific work that has been done with video material of singers like Liza (Liza with a Z, completely restored), Judy (a whole box of restored material), Barbra, Tony Bennet (some material already in blu-ray), Elvis (check the restored Hawaii concert and the Comeback Special, or On Tour, recently in Blu-ray). Frank is probably above all of them, but not on image/video quality of his DVDs!

Marcio Azevedo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful live concert...Frank at his best November 13, 2010
I believe this to be one of the best live performances ever recorded. I saw Mr. Sinatra live many times later in his career and this is my absolute favorite. I Won't Dance---perfection.

5.0 out of 5 stars "AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME" May 18, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Arguably our greatest pop singer ever, this is Frank Sinatra's finest concert video. It is a perfect representation of his remarkable talent. The old charts, and new, were played beautifully by the Buddy Rich Orchestra. Further, Sinatra's wonderful stage presence, the intimacy of his ballads and excitement of his up-tempos, and particularly, his still very excellent voice range which includes improvement in his lower voicings, were a joy to experience as a fan.

If you are a Sinatra fan and you own a DVD player, believe me, this one's for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Sinatra April 26, 2011
This 1982 performance in the Dominican Republic remains one of the great Frank Sinatra concerts. The Buddy Rich Orchestra and guitarist Tony Mottola help bring out the best in Ol' Blue Eyes. "My Kind of Town," "The House I Live In" and the sublime "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" are among the highlights of an excellent setlist. A definite keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best is here and gone March 17, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Its a fact. the golden era of the Big Bands and singers from then is just no longer! This concert is just so well done and Sinatra is just so damn great, a review to justify this kind of talent is simply that it no longer and most likely never will ever exist again. Get this show. It's a front row seat to historical genius. I just don't know how else to to describe how magnificent this generation of music, movies, skill, dedication, commitment to craft and on and on can be acknowledged. Thank God for video. Where technology has improved...talent greatness like this is no longer. Buddy Rich (although ) looks ill and very tired is another verification of absolute dedication.
