"I Get A Kick Out of You" From Frank Sinatra:The Concert Collection and Concert For The Americas

Biography

Only Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson can rival Frank Sinatra for biggest-selling solo artist of all time. His jazz-influenced singing remained internationally renowned whatever whims, fashions or innovations were introduced by new generations. In a solo career that included over 70 albums and hundreds of singles, from the late-30s until the mid-90s, Sinatra remained universally loved even as… Read more in Amazon's Frank Sinatra Store

This review is from: Frank Sinatra Sings the Select Sammy Cahn (Audio CD)
This is a compilation of the songs performed by Sinatra which were written by Sammy Cahn. Sammy Cahn is the Oscar winning writter of such hit motion picture songs as "The Tender Trap" and "Three Coins in the Fountain." After he met young Frank Sinatra singing with the Tommy Dorsey Band, he provided Sinatra with a number of songs that became hits and helped to make both men stars. In the early 1940s Sinatra was signed by MGM to appear in the musical Anchors Aweigh; he refused to sing unless Cahn wrote the material. In 1954 Cahn and Styne wrote "Three Coins in the Fountain" for Sinatra to sing in the film Three Coins in the Fountain. The song garnered Cahn his first Oscar. The two went on to have a long lasting and wonderful string of hits. If you are interested in getting the true feel of big band ballads, get this album. This compilation is something I would recomend to ANYONE, especially those who love sinatra.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is Such A Lovely CD . . . (Thank you to a friend!), November 15, 2007
This review is from: Frank Sinatra Sings the Select Sammy Cahn (Audio CD)
"When Frank Sinatra was young, in the '40s, he was a violin. In the '50s, he was a viola. By the '60s, he was a cello and when he got to the '80s, he was a bass. The music was still sweet. It was just played on a different instrument." ~ Sammy Cahn ~

Will Friedwald wrote on Liner Notes that "Sammy Cahn often liked to say that he put more words in Frank Sinatra's mouth than any other songwriter." That is particularly true and a fact. The Sinatra-Cahn collaborations resulted in many of the most beautiful songs of all-time. There's no denying that Sammy Cahn is Sinatra's favorite lyricist, and the admiration was mutual - Sinatra was Cahn's favorite interpreter of his lovely songs.

Brad Benedict did a superb job in compiling for Capitol Records 18 of the most-beloved songs from the creative pen of Sammy Cahn who had endless capabilities of creating meaningful songs with intelligent lyrics. Cahn, who wrote songs as fast a train, supplied these lyrics to the beautiful, timeless and remarkable music of Jim Van Heusen, Jule Styne, Axel Stordahl, Paul Weston and Charles Chaplin.

The lush orchestrations of the brilliant Nelson Riddle, the exuberant arranging and conducting skills of the great Billy May, the pristine beauty of Frank Sinatra's voice, the delicate charms of the melodies, and the enchanting elegance of the lyrics by Sammy Cahn have made this lovely CD a desirable item to any serious Sinatra collector. The most famous Chairman of the Board recorded the songs from this collection between 1954 and 1961 - some of the prime years of his bright musical career.

The music of Frank Sinatra is ageless, timeless and never out-of-fashion. He had interpreted countless songs in his illustrious, bright, long and distinguished musical career. So many songs are identified with him, especially the lyrics by Sammy Cahn, which he made his very own. As soon as I begin to listen to this CD, in an instant, I feel like I've stepped into another place and time twenty-three thousand miles away!

My highlights for the mellow songs are "Time After Time," "All The Way," "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry (listen to Al Viola's sublime guitar playing, wow!), "The Last Dance," "All My Tomorrows" and "If It's The Last Thing I Do."

For the up-tempo tracks: "Come Fly With Me," "Come Dance With Me," "Day By Day, "The Tender Trap," "Saturday Night Is The Loneliest Night of The Week" and "Five Minutes More."

I'm surprised this album didn't get a lot of reviews when it's one of the best Sinatra CDs ever produced. It has a stunning combination of perfect arrangements and exceptional renditions that makes this CD truly appealing in a manner that pleases your ears. This will surely add nostalgic beauty to your Sinatra collection.

I wholeheartedly recommend it. Have a lovely listening affair!

P.S. Thanks so kindly to an Amazon friend for this lovely present. You're absolutely right, "If It's The Last Thing I Do" is a beautiful song. I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sinatra at his swinging Sammy Cahn best, June 6, 2006
This review is from: Frank Sinatra Sings the Select Sammy Cahn (Audio CD)
Cahn was one of Sinatra's favorite composers. Sinatra sings these songs with a particular upbeat flash and grace. Most of the songs even the big movie hit songs like 'Three Coins in the Fountain' and 'The Tender Trap' seem to me excellent but not at the very Kerns- Gershwin - Porter -Rodgers - Hart- Hammerstein level. But there is one song here, 'Time after Time' which can stand up with the best of all time.
Nonetheless the album is outstanding, Sinatra at his swinging Sammy Cahn best.
