Frank Sinatra was arguably the most important popular music figure of the 20th century, his only real rivals for the title being Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles. In a professional career that lasted 60 years, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to maintain his appeal and pursue his musical goals despite often countervailing trends. December 12, 1915: Francis Albert "Frank" Sinatra is born to Martin and Dolly Sinatra in Hoboken, New Jersey.


Early to mid-1940's: Beginning his musical career in the swing era, Sinatra becomes a solo artist with great success being the idol of the "bobby soxers."


Autumn of 1940: Sinatra appears in his first film, Las Vegas Nights.


March 4, 1946: Sinatra releases his first album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra.


1946: Sinatra wins Oscar "Honorary Award" for The House I Live In.


March 25, 1954: Sinatra wins Oscar "Best Supporting Actor" award for From Here To Eternity.


1955: Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely peaks at No. 1 on Billboard's album chart during a 120-week stay.


March 30, 1955: Sinatra is nominated for Best Actor for his role as “Frankie” in The Man With the Golden Arm.


1959: A No. 1 album for five weeks on Billboard, Come Fly With Me remains one of the defining Sinatra albums.



1961: Ring-A-Ding-Ding, the first album under Sinatra's own label, Reprise Records, is a major success peaking at No. 4 on Billboard.


January 27, 1961: Sinatra plays a benefit show at Carnegie Hall for Martin Luther King, Jr. He goes on to play a major role in the desegregation of Nevada hotels and casinos.


1965: Sinatra wins an Emmy and a Peabody award for Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music.


1965: Frank wins the "Lifetime Achievement Award" at the Grammy's.


August, 1966: Sinatra at the Sands, his first live album, is released.


1966: Sinatra's September of My Years wins "Album of the Year" at the Grammy's.


1969: My Way is released featuring the song "My Way" which would become more identified with him than any other song over his seven decades as a singer.


April 15, 1971:Frank Sinatra receives the "Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award" at the Academy Awards.


June 12, 1971: Sinatra announces at a concert in Hollywood that he is retiring.


1973: Sinatra comes out of retirement with an album and television special, both entitled Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back.


1980: Trilogy: Past Present Future, Sinatra's first album in six years, is released. This highly ambitious triple album garners 6 Grammy nominations.


December 3-4, 1983: Sinatra is one of 5 recipients of the Kennedy Centers Honors.


May 23, 1985: President Ronald Reagan awards Sinatra the Presidential Medal of Freedom award, the highest award for a civilian, at a White House Ceremony.


1993: Duets is released. Sinatra's duet with Bono on "I've Got You Under My Skin" contributes to the album's great success, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard charts.


February 25, 1995: Sinatra sings before a live audience for the last time at a private party on the closing night of the Frank Sinatra Desert Classic golf tournament. His closing song was "The Best Is Yet To Come."


May 14, 1997: Sinatra is honored the Congressional Gold Medal award.


May 14, 1998: Frank Sinatra passes away in Los Angeles.


May 13, 2008: Nothing But The Best, celebrating the legacy of Frank Sinatra, will be released.
